"The league needs the big brother, big sister program right here,” Garnett said.

Kevin Garnett believes that the NBA must look at adding mentorship programs so as to keep young and promising players grounded.

Amid the Ja Morant controversy that’s been a talking point for some time now, Garnett advocated for some changes that the league could use. “This is when I think the league needs the big brother, big sister program right here,” Garnett said while in conversation with former NBA player Tony Allen on Showtime’s Ticket & The Truth. “This is what I think the fraternities and sororities are for, real s**t.”

Citing Ja’s example, “They don’t know what they doing, they just do whatever the agent is suggesting, whatever they think is clever and you know, you damn near think you’re untouchable until you run into situations like this. … Everyone wants to take it back once it’s done, you know what I’m saying? And he has the luxury of being able to survive this, but more importantly, I don’t think he’s thinking about what he is.”

Those who have indeed followed KG over the course of his decorated 21-year career in the NBA know that he went from a player to a solid locker room presence for the young guns, and it makes sense that he would call for a mentorship program.

It does make sense considering that the new-age NBA players could use a lot more guidance and block out the external noise. Especially for someone like Ja, who is young and brimming with potential.

Tony Allen Has Sound Advice For Ja Morant

On the same podcast, a former Grizzlies legend had some profound advice for Ja. Tony Allen believed that Ja needed some help with the guns in the first place.

“More so than anything, you gotta be properly planning your movements,” Allen said. “When you out and about, and you definitely think you need a gun or you need places to go that you need a gun, you might not need to be going to those places. I say that from experience … I’ve been through some of everything that he’s trying to portray. It can get rough.”

Ja has found himself in trouble after flashing his gun on Instagram Live for the second time — a move that saw the Grizzlies suspend him. In the 2022-23 playoffs, he averaged 24.6 PPG, 6.8 RPG, and 7.0 APG for the Grizzlies and is surely key in their championship hopes.

Maybe the league could pay close attention to KG’s advice. He’s not wrong. And maybe someone of his stature could surely be what players would need to stay grounded.
