The Russell Westbrook-Los Angeles Lakers partnership didn’t bring the desired results, and what started as a fairy tale turned out to be a horror movie.
Westbrook couldn’t find his place on the Lakers, and people never really helped them. Instead, many turned their backs on him, and the team ultimately traded him to the Utah Jazz.
JR Smith recently discussed this situation, defending Westbrook and supporting the legend for everything he endured during his time with the Purple and Gold.
“Honestly speaking, I understand what he was going through,” Smith said. “Given the passion that he has for the game, and then seeing people around you that are supposed to be the closest to you – your teammates and organization kinda flip on you, and then the fanbase. And he’s an LA guy, he’s from LA… So to have that type of experience with your home team and your home city, it’s really tough. Fortunately, I’m happy to see him go to the Clippers and have the success he’s had.”

In the end, Russ was traded to the Utah Jazz. His second season with the team was a lot better, as he embraced a sixth-man role, which helped the team at some point. However, Westbrook was inconsistent, and not even Darvin Ham’s plan helped him reach his best level.
He ended up on another team before returning to Los Angeles with the other team of the city.
Russell Westbrook Found His Place On The Clippers
Westbrook stayed in LA even after the Lakers fiasco, but things didn’t go as expected for him, collectively speaking. Russ once again showed that he could adapt to any role and helped the Clippers reach the 2023 NBA Playoffs.
He had to go against Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Chris Paul on his own, trying to will the Los Angeles Clippers to the second round of the postseason. Westbrook was on a tear, being great on both ends of the court and not ducking any smoke.
Nevertheless, the season ended earlier than expected for the Clippers, and Russ left a huge impression on the team. They’re reportedly planning to bring him back, but money could be a major obstacle for the player and the team.
