Former Boston Celtics Brian Scalabrine has gotten used to making controversial statements, and some of them can even go against his former team.
During a recent appearance on the Dan Patrick Show, Scalabrine talked about Stephen Curry and Larry Bird, picking the Golden State Warriors legend over the Boston Celtics iconic, claiming that Curry ranks higher than Bird on his all-time list.
“Yeah, because of longevity. That’s gonna get me in trouble in Boston. If Larry would have played, if he would have kept on going, then yeah, Larry Bird would be better. But longevity does matter, it’s the reason why LeBron’s numbers are going to be off the charts. And I know Steph Curry is resting in those deprivation tanks, and he’s got bodywork people and all that. Back in the day, they drank a six-pack and smoked a cigarette, like that was their recovery. I get all that, but you can’t look at the body of work when you’re talking about the all-time greats and not factor in the longevity of it.”
Scalabrine goes on to say that Curry might be a top-5 player ever, crediting his drive to win, calling him a killer and somebody that won’t dunk on you but will find other ways to destroy you on the court.
This is, of course, a delicate topic, as Curry is one of the best players of his generation, while Bird is a big legend on his own. Comparing these two is always interesting as they’re two great shooters, but not everybody will agree when one is ranked above the other.
Bird had a great career, saving the NBA in the 80s and becoming a big figure in the game with the Boston Celtics. Curry is also one of the most influential players of all time, changing the way the game is played, and leaving a huge mark on the league.
Stephen Curry Is Taking Steps To Be A Solid Top-10 Player Of All Time
Curry has broken many records during his career and now is the all-time 3-pointer leader. He’s a four-time NBA champion, a two-time NBA MVP, a one-time Finals MVP, and a perennial All-Star.
With another championship, some think he should be considered one of the four best players of all time, which is debatable. However, with a fifth ring, Curry would leave no doubt that he belongs in the top-10 list. Can he surpass Larry? That will depend on how people view this situation, but it’s clear that we’re in front of a generational talent that changed the league with his performances.
