The Phoenix Suns played a lot better in Game 2 than they did in Game 1 in their playoff series against the Denver Nuggets, but the outcome was the same, they lost.
Devin Booker, who had 35 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists in the game, claims he isn’t feeling too bad about their situation though when asked about his confidence level.
“I love it. I just love playoff basketball,” Booker said. “That’s the first thing I said when I got in the locker room. You just have to love this s***, embrace it. There’s not many people that get the chance to do what we’re doing, playing the highest level of basketball. So, competent at the highest level, don’t forget to have fun with it and just get after it, every time we get a chance.”
(starts at 4:05 mark):
That is perhaps the right mindset to have at this point. While the situation may seem dire to some, the fact is that the Nuggets have just held serve so far. They have clearly been the superior team but we have seen the tide turn for many series over the years when it shifts to the other venue.
The Suns will also take some confidence from the fact that Game 2 was so close till the final minutes unlike Game 1, where they were blown out. They did suffer a big blow with Chris Paul suffering a groin injury midway through the third quarter though and that could be devastating for a team that already doesn’t have a lot of depth.
Michael Malone Took A Shot At The Suns
The Suns have heavily relied on mid-range shots in these playoffs as they have three of the best mid-range scorers in the league in Booker, Paul, and Kevin Durant. While they are great at it, even when the shots are heavily contested, Nuggets head coach Michael Malone said tough two-pointers aren’t going to beat his team over 48 minutes.
The Suns only attempted 23 three-pointers in Game 1 and hit just seven of those. They made it a point to shoot more threes in Game 2 as they attempted 31 of them, but they only made six of them, which was a big reason why they lost. Booker went 4-8 from beyond the arc, but the rest of the team shot a woeful 2-23. The Suns can’t be deterred from shooting more threes after this game though, as they aren’t going to win with those tough two-pointers as Malone said.
