After being eliminated from playoff contention, the Minnesota Timberwolves will re-group and assess their options to improve over the summer. But as they consider their next move, it might be important for them to remember how Anthony Edwards fits into the equation.

He is the star of the future, no doubt, but are the pieces they have now suitable co-stars for him? As Edwards; recent Instagram activity would suggest, the answer is no. On Instagram this week, one fan noticed a comment that Edwards liked, which seems to blame the front office for making the Rudy Gobert trade.

Damn even ANT is liking comments speaking on how stupid that trade was that Minnesota pulled off πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ pic.twitter.com/8BuHfVkDhG

As a 3x Defensive Player of The Year, Rudy Gobert was a great acquisition on paper, but fans questioned his fit almost right away. As a slow, old-school big man with limitations offensively, it was always going to be a challenge to make him work alongside Karl-Anthony Towns and a roster of inexperienced young players.

Consider the fact that the Timberwolves gave up four first-rounders for Rudy, and it’s impossible to call the trade anything but a failure for the Timberwolves.

Timberwolves Will Make Moves This Summer

It would be shocking if the Timberwolves did nothing to change their roster in the offseason. Despite how bad things appear, they still have tradeable assets that they could use to re-tool around Edwards. One such asset is Karl-Anthony Towns, who would bring back a nice return for Minnesota.

β€œTeams are already talking about it,” NBA Insider Jon Krawczynski said on an episode of the Lowe Post podcast. β€œThere’s no doubt that other teams are eyeing this situation and looking to see if KAT will become available…if the bottom falls out of this thing and they go forward that way, there are going to be teams knocking on the door.”

Trading Towns would only work if the Timberwolves got back another star player in return. Whether it’s a guy like Damian Lillard, Bam Adebayo, or some other big-name player, Edwards deserves to have a roster that fits his game and plays the right way.

Of course, Edwards himself still has questions to answer about his own status in the league, but if he’s the star that he appears to be, then the Timberwolves cannot waste time waiting to make the necessary decision.
