JJ Redick has been very active in recent days, making the headlines with his takes, sometimes getting big backlash for his words, but never backing down when expressing his opinions.
Redick recently reacted to Doc Rivers trying to explain why the ‘Lob City’ Los Angeles Clippers never won a championship. JJ, who was part of the team, had a big response for his former head coach.
“I thought it was weird,” Redick said. “To not get any of that accountability from him, and the interesting part, too, is he’s talking about players getting along, and he was brought in…Doc’s reputation was like as a personality manager…and he was a GM, so like if people weren’t getting along, I don’t know, it’s kind of on (Doc).”
The former sharpshooter added that during the time he was there, many people were convinced the Clippers had a big chance to win it all, and then he said the opposite, which didn’t sit well with the former player.
“I guess the part that bothers me is like, in ’14 and ’15, we all believed we could win. Doc, the orator and the motivator, clearly believed we could win. Why randomly, eight years later, are you changing the narrative on that?”
Those Los Angeles Clippers were expected to take over the NBA before the Golden State Warriors decided to make a statement and became the strongest form in the association. Draymond Green even revealed that was a big motivation for the Dubs, who cashed in on the Clippers’ failures to become a dynasty in the 2010s.
Doc Rivers Put The Blame On Players For Not Winning A Title With ‘Lob City’ Clippers
Rivers was recently asked about which of his prior teams reminded him of this year’s Philadelphia 76ers, and the veteran coach made a surprising statement while discussing those Clippers.
“I’m not trying to take anything away from that team, but that team was never going to win when you look back at it. We just didn’t get along well enough as a group, and you can’t win without cooperation. That’s the only way you can win,” Rivers said.
Even though things between their two stars, Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, didn’t go well, the Clippers were perennial contenders during those years. In the end, things fell apart, and Rivers and co. could never reach their goal.
Eight years later, this team remains a discussed topic in the league, even creating issues between some of their former members.
