Klay Thompson Responds To Adrian Wojnarowski’s Report That He Wants A Max Contract This Summer

Klay Thompson has enjoyed a fine 2022-23 season for the Golden State Warriors and has shown that he still has plenty of gas left in the tank.

Given how well he has played, Thompson is expecting a max-level contract extension this summer, as per NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski. The report caused a bit of a stir, and Thompson was asked about it recently.

“I’m seeking a championship and everything else after that will play itself out,” Thompson said.

Klay clearly isn’t interested in talking about it publically but deflecting the question in that manner does make you believe that maybe he does want that max contract. The Warriors had given him a five-year, $190 million max deal in 2019, despite him tearing his ACL in the NBA Finals against the Toronto Raptors, and there was some hope that he might take a lesser deal now to stay.

It doesn’t look to be the case, and Klay probably feels his good play merits a deal of that sort. He averaged 21.9 PPG, 4.1 RPG (career-high), and 2.4 APG while shooting 41.2% from beyond the arc. Thompson also led the league in three-pointers made and sent a message to his doubters after that as well. He remains supremely confident in his own abilities, and that might end up being a problem for Golden State.

The Warriors’ Big 3 Won’t Be Around For Much Longer

Klay’s future hasn’t really been a topic of conversation for a while, but it will be now, and it will be interesting to see how he reacts if he doesn’t get an extension this summer. He will be a free agent next year, and if he has another good season, a few teams will line up for his services.

The other big name in line for a contract is, of course, Draymond Green, who has a player option for next season. Green’s future is very much up in the air, and it was reported last year that he wants the max as well. The Warriors will struggle to give one of them the max, let alone both. They’ll try their best to keep the two of them around, but it seems inevitable that the Big 3 will be broken up, with Stephen Curry the only one guaranteed to stay.
