Russell Westbrook had a polarizing performance in the Los Angeles Clippers Game 1 win over the Phoenix Suns.

Westbrook struggled from the field in a 3/19 performance but played sensational defense, including a game-winning block. He opened up on how he will do anything to win games, even when he can’t impact the scoring.

“My whole career, I’ve been priding myself every season to do everything. I think I’m one of those guys that can do everything each and every night. Whatever’s needed of me to win the game, to win the game, I’ll do it. I am just grateful that T-Lue and the staff believe in me that even when my shot isn’t falling, they’ll allow me to be in the game.”

Westbrook plays with an extreme effort at all points, which means he always gives himself a shot to pounce on any opportunity. His hustle was remarkable in Game 1, and if it continues, the Clippers may not need to bench him in the fourth quarter anymore.

Russell Westbrook Proving He Wasn’t A Problem

Over the last two seasons, the discussion around Russell Westbrook has been exceedingly negative. He was vilified for his failures with the Lakers and was allegedly called a locker-room vampire after he left. He has been doing everything in his power with the Clippers to encourage his young players while playing a role alongside the other rotation players on the team.

Westbrook is no longer an MVP-caliber star, and he seems to have made his peace with that. He is in a better-suited situation, as the Lakers were paying him $47 million to be a role player as compared to the Clippers picking him up off the buyout market.

His current averages of 15.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 7.6 assists on the Clippers are not that of a superstar, but they are that of a very solid rotational player that can show up in big moments.
