Tanking is a very common and well-known practice in the NBA today, but teams aren’t allowed to just blatantly admit to throwing games. So after the Mavericks revealed the details of their plan to sit their top players on the final night of the season, the league had no choice but to slap them with a $750,000 fine.

In response, Mark Cuban pulled the ultimate boss move by matching the money, doubling it, and donating it all to charity, which is what the league typically does with paid fines.

Basically, Mark Cuban is mocking the NBA for the fine and showing that a $750,000 penalty doesn’t make a dent in his $5.1 billion net worth.

The truth is, the Mavericks don’t regret giving up at all and probably would have thrown in the towel a lot sooner had they known how things would end. Despite how bad the season is overall, it’s worth it for Dallas to do whatever they can to keep their upcoming draft pick and try to use it as an asset to improve the team around Luka.

If they don’t, and Kyrie Irving leaves in the summer, there might be nothing to stop the whole thing from crashing down.

Can Luka And Kyrie Win A Title Together?

As the Mavericks scramble to save their future, it may be worth asking if the core of Luka and Irving can even succeed given their shortcomings defensively. Plus, as ball-dominant scorers, there are also questions about how they set their teammates up to succeed.

“They on the outside looking in,” said Paul Pierce. “They are a top 5 individuals. Individual scorers. They can’t work together. Maybe they need time… they need chemistry, they need a training camp… You can’t just throw these pieces together.”

Regardless of what happens with Uncle Drew, the Mavs will need to fill out the roster with capable contributors or the team will never break out of its mediocrity.

So even if it means getting fined for nearly $1 million, Mark Cuban is going to ensure he does right by his team and puts them in the best position to win it all.
