The 2022-23 season ended in disappointing fashion for the Dallas Mavericks, and it would seem Kyrie Irving wasn’t in the mood to talk about it.
While Luka Doncic and the rest of the Mavericks sat down for their exit interviews with the media, Irving declined to do it, as per Tim MacMahon.
“Kyrie Irving declined to do an exit interview with the Dallas media. Other Mavs, including Luka Doncic, did exit interviews today.”

Irving had stated after being traded to the Mavericks that he would talk about his future after the season. Declining to do this exit interview does give the impression that he doesn’t want to talk about his upcoming free agency, as his exit interview was sure to be dominated by questions about it.
Even if he was leaning towards staying with the Mavs when he arrived, Irving certainly would have some doubts about it now. While some growing pains were to be expected on his arrival, he certainly couldn’t have imagined a scenario where they didn’t even make it to the play-in tournament.
Luka Doncic Plans To Assist The Mavericks In Re-Signing Kyrie Irving
While wins were hard to come by after acquiring Kyrie, it is clear that the Mavericks want to keep him. In his 20 games with the team, Irving averaged 27.0 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 6.0 APG, and 1.3 SPG while shooting 51.0% from the field, which is quite impressive. While he does have to shoulder some of the blame for the way the season ended, he certainly wasn’t the reason why they collapsed in the manner that they did.
Owner Mark Cuban revealed that re-signing Irving is their top priority for the summer, and it would appear Doncic will assist the team in their efforts to re-sign Kyrie. Luka also stated that he thinks they’re a great fit together and that building chemistry on the court takes time. That is certainly true, but with the results being so bad in their short time together, there are a lot of concerns regarding just how good of a pairing this is.
