When the Mavericks traded for Kyrie Irving in early February, nobody thought they were ready to compete for a championship. But nobody thought they’d be this bad.

Now, after back-to-back losses against the Charlotte Hornets, the Mavericks are officially at rock bottom as they sit 11th in the West.

Appearing on NBA Today this week, ESPN’s Tim MacMahon spoke candidly about the state of the Mavericks and tagged them as the most disappointing team in all of basketball.

“Sound the damn alarms. Jason Kidd tried to. The reason that they made the Kyrie Irving trade— this was a desperate move. Jason Kidd wanted it, and Luka Doncic wanted it because he was so frustrated that the Mavericks were mediocre. He was miserable. This is the most disappointing team in the NBA.”

The Mavericks have been massively inconsistent in the Luka/Irving era. Despite good play offensively on most nights, they just don’t have the defense to keep them in games.

Plug that alongside distractions for Doncic behind the scenes, it’s clear that the Mavericks have some things to worry about.

“It’s really frustrating. I think you can see it with me on the court,” said Luka. “Sometimes I don’t feel it’s me. I’m just being out there, you know? I used to have really fun smiling on court, but it’s just been so frustrating for a lot of reasons, not just basketball.”

Whatever’s going on with Luka, he’s got to work through it fast, or things could get really ugly for Dallas.

Mavericks’ Future In Jeopardy Amid Kyrie Irving’s Looming Free Agency

The Mavs took a massive risk by bringing in Irving, giving up a haul of picks and valuable rotation players. While Kyrie has fulfilled his role to perfection so far, their failures could ultimately push him away as a free agent this summer.

With nobody to replace him with, the Mavericks would be stuck in a wretched situation that Doncic might eventually feel compelled to force his way out of.

So, this could be the beginning of the end for the Mavs… or it could be the start of an amazing success story. But, at least for now, the whole team should be feeling some sense of panic with how things have played out so far.
