Being a rookie in the NBA is hard work, both on the court and off it. You’re trying to get to grips with the league and at the same time, the vets on the team demand that you run errands for them.
The vets on the Los Angeles Lakers weren’t quite so demanding of Austin Reaves last season though, as he recounted his experiences on the Point Forward podcast.
“I will say (Rajon) Rondo looked out,” Reaves said. “He was the one mostly asking me to go get stuff, so he would hand me a couple of dollars when I got back. But, other than that, Bron’s (LeBron James) actually really low-maintenance. I think he asked me one time to go get an Xbox remote, so I obviously did that. He gave me a couple of dollars, but they let me skate pretty good.”
(starts at 26:49 mark):
If that was really the only time LeBron James asked him to get something for him, then he did get off easy. Reaves enjoyed a solid rookie season for an undrafted player and his attitude on the court really won over the fans. He quickly became a favorite among the fanbase and to his credit, has taken some big strides in his sophomore season.
He has averaged 12.3 PPG, 3.0 RPG, and 3.0 APG this season while shooting 52.0% from the field. Reaves has really come into his own in their last few games and recently had a career night, finishing with 35 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists against the Orlando Magic. He seems set to be a sought-after commodity in the summer thanks to his exploits this season.
Austin Reaves Could Leave The Lakers
Shams Charania reported that Reaves is looking for a four-year deal worth around $50 million, but Chandler Parsons thinks he can get even more. With multiple teams being interested, a bit of a bidding war could be on the cards and that would be bad news for the Lakers.
If they are expecting him to take a discount to stay with them, then they are probably mistaken. Reaves made it clear he wants to make as much money as he can and you can never blame a player for that. He is a restricted free agent though, so the Lakers can match any offer that he gets.
