NBA officiating has been a big topic this season, and for all the wrong reasons. Thanks to rule changes and various adjustments to the NBA’s style of play, we are seeing the game transform before our very eyes and the officiating is still trying to catch up.
This season, we’ve seen that in full force with an abundance of missed calls that have cost some teams very winnable games.
According to Hawks star Trae Young, refs should be held more accountable for their mistakes, similar to how players can get published for breaking the rules.
“We don’t care now. We move!” Young wrote, via James Herbert of CBS Sports. “This goes back to my statement I said at the beginning of the year, refs should be held more accountable ($, suspensions, etc.) just like us. They shouldn’t get ‘We missed it’ passes.”
It’s not easy to call an NBA game in real-time, and the refs must be commended for the world they do every game day. Still, it might not be a bad idea to introduce certain penalties if they miss a certain number of calls.
No matter whose side you’re on, however, everyone can agree that the officiating has been a problem this season.
LeBron James’ Outburst Put The League On Notice
People really started paying attention to the refs after a certain moment from LeBron James earlier this season, when he called them out publicly after an egregious no-call at the end of the game.
“It’s challenging, really challenging. I don’t get it. I’m attacking the paint just as much as any of the other guys in this league shooting double-digit free throws a night,” said James. “I don’t get it. I don’t understand it.”
The players and refs seem to be on different wavelengths this season and while that by itself is nothing new, the reaction from some players suggests that changes may be warranted.
For now, though, guys will have to deal with how things are because the NBA will not make any changes right now. To win the NBA playoffs this year, teams will have to find a way to beat their opponents and live with whatever calls get made along the way.
But who knows, maybe one day in the future the NBA may consider a more aggressive approach with their officials to ensure the integrity of the game continues unscathed.
