Guess Kyrie Irving won’t be a Los Angeles Laker anytime soon as one of the NBA insiders revealed that the “Kyrie ship has sailed.”
Per HoopsHype, The Athletic’s Jovan Buha shared his thoughts on the Lakers’ plans of adding Irving in the summer, and it does come as a dampener for the fans who were keen to see a LeBron James-Kyrie Irving reunion.
“From what I’ve been told, they’re not going to be pursuing Kyrie Irving this offseason…,” Buha says. “To my knowledge and to what I’ve been told, the Kyrie ship, I think, has sailed. You never want to say never. That could easily change, but as of right now, their plan is to run this (team) back.”
He further added that LA has won games with the roster they restructured ahead of the trade deadline and that the team has won games with James.
“The non-LeBron minutes were always an issue for the Lakers going back to his first year in LA and the championship season… This is my third,” he added. Buha also added for good measure about Irving’s trade requirements from the Brooklyn Nets.
“When it got to the point that Brooklyn was basically asking for every tradeable asset, they felt it was too much, given all the uncertainty that comes with Kyrie and the way things have played out the last few years.”
The Lakers were ready to deal Russell Westbrook along with their future picks to the Nets, who reportedly had no interest in sending the guard to the Purple and Gold. In the end, the Dallas Mavericks acquired his services, while the Lakers made some savvy upgrades to put themselves in playoff contention.
The DeMar DeRozan Or Zach LaVine Trade For The Lakers Is Still On The Table
The Chicago Bulls superstars DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine were two players the Lakers were targeting well ahead of the deadline, and while that didn’t pan out this time around, the discussion about trading for them is still reportedly on the table.
Jonathan Adams of Heavy reported his conversation with an NBA executive that the blockbuster trade was still a possibility.
“Max Christie, too, has been impressive early on, if he can fill in, he has a lot of 3-and-D potentials. He could be a trade chip if there is a star available around the draft, you could imagine him and Bamba as part of a package for Zach LaVine or DeMar DeRozan if the Bulls wanted to go that route.”
While it would mean doing away with a valuable young asset in Christie, and a promising big in Bamba, the Lakers would greatly benefit on the offensive front with even one of the aforementioned Bulls stars.
Recently, we created the super plan for the Lakers and how they could create the perfect starting lineup for the 2023-24 season.
Only time will tell what the Lakers’ offseason plans for. For now, Irving’s days of suiting up for LA look unlikely.
