Sometimes on the basketball court, we see things get heated between two opposing players. That is a normal occurrence on the basketball court, and players exchanging words is a common part of the sport’s culture.
Recently, we saw Trae Young get into an altercation with Marcus Smart during the recent game between the Atlanta Hawks and the Boston Celtics. The point guard ended up getting a technical foul as a result. After the game, Trae Young refused to comment on the officiating, joking that he wasn’t going to “Fred VanVleet” the referees.
“I’m not gonna Fred VanVleet these people,” Young said per Souichi Terada of Mass Live. “I’m just going to keep it there.”
Trae Young is obviously referring to Fred VanVleet’s viral rant toward the referees after the Toronto Raptors played the Los Angeles Clippers. VanVleet singled out referee Ben Taylor in particular, claiming that the official was “terrible” in that game.
“Most of the refs are trying hard. I like a lot of the refs, they’re trying hard, they’re pretty fair, and communicate well”, VanVleet said. “And then you got the other ones who just want to be dicks and just kind of f** up the game.”
“I’ll take a fine. I don’t really care. I thought Ben Taylor was f**king terrible today. On most nights, out of the 3, there’s 1 or 2 that just f**k the game up. It’s been like that a couple of games in a row.”
There’s no doubt that there has been a lot of complaining about the officiating this year, both from NBA players and fans. Marcus Smart notably spoke out in support of Fred VanVleet recently as well. It will be interesting to see if the league ends up addressing this issue, as it seems as though it is frustrating for a lot of people.
The Atlanta Hawks Need Trae Young To Step Up To Make The Playoffs
There is no doubt that Trae Young is having an elite season, and his offensive production definitely suggests that he has superstar potential. The Atlanta Hawks have also hired coach Quin Snyder to help him, and now the goal is for Trae Young to show that he can be the No. 1 option on a championship-level team.
Hopefully, we see Trae Young lead the Atlanta Hawks far in the playoffs. There’s no doubt that he’s a top-tier offensive star, and we will see how far the team ends up getting in the future.
