January 26, 2020, was an incredibly dark day for basketball as Kobe Bryant and his 14-year-old daughter Gianna Bryant tragically passed away in a helicopter crash.

Vanessa Bryant has been trying to get justice against the police officers that took pictures of her late husband and daughter’s bodies after the crash, with her finally being awarded $28.85 million from Los Angeles County as damages.

“Today marks the successful culmination of Mrs. Bryant’s courageous battle to hold accountable those who engaged in this grotesque conduct,” Luis Li, Vanessa’s lawyer, said in a statement. “She fought for her husband, her daughter, and all those in the community whose deceased family were treated with similar disrespect. We hope her victory at trial and this settlement will put an end to this practice.”

Bryant won a $16 million verdict over this case in August as part of a larger settlement that totaled $31 million. The lawsuit began in September 2020 and was over negligence by LA county. The pictures were primarily shared with members of the workforce and haven’t been leaked to the public so far, with this case ensuring they never are.

The crash also included the Altobelli family, John, Keri, and Alyssa, Payton Chester, and her mother Sara, Christina Mauser, and the pilot, Ara Zobayan.

What’s Next For Vanessa Bryant And Her Family?

The money that Vanessa will be receiving from this settlement will go toward the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation, which honors Kobe and Gianna Bryant.

Vanessa had pleaded with Alex Villanueva, Sherrif of the LA County at the time of the crash, to not let anybody take pictures of Kobe and GiGi. He evidently failed at his job and has kept the Bryant family living in fear of one day seeing those pictures leaked on social media.

The family can heal and start to leave this in the past.
