Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson has been doing an admirable job in the absence of Stephen Curry. After a game-winning performance against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Thompson had high praise for himself.
Klay called himself the modern-day Reggie Miller while speaking to Steve Smith on NBA TV, talking about the culture of ’90s basketball and naming Reggie and Kobe Bryant his biggest influences.
“It comes from watching y’all play. Growing up as a ’90s baby and watching ’90s and 2000s basketball, the greatest to play this game and the biggest competitors. Being the shooting guard I am, I idolized Kobe Bryant, He was never one to make friends on the floor he just wanted to win at all costs. My style resembles that of Reggie Miller, I call myself the modern-day Reggie. He got in so many scraps, he got under so many people’s skins.”

Thompson is averaging 28.6 points per game in the 8 games Stephen Curry had been injured, leading the Warriors to a 4-4 record.
Is Klay The Modern-Day Reggie Miller?
Reggie Miller was arguably one of the greatest guards of his generation and was known to be one of the toughest matchups of that era. Miller was one of the greatest rivals of Michael Jordan and single-handedly carried his Indiana Pacers to the NBA Finals. Klay Thompson is great but we’ve never seen him emulate Miller outside of both being lethal outside shooters.
Klay has always been a secondary star on the Golden State Warriors, even taking smaller roles next to Kevin Durant and Draymond Green at various points. Miller was the ‘bus driver’ for his entire career and never left the Indiana Pacers even when they couldn’t win. If anything, Damian Lillard more resembles Miller’s career arc in the modern era.
Thompson is unique in his role as we haven’t seen a supporting player of his caliber before. He could’ve been a star alone but instead has 4 championships to look back on as one of the best secondary options in league history.
