Damian Lillard made history against the Houston Rockets with an incredible 71 points that helped his Blazers pick up a much-needed win while shorthanded.
Lillard spoke about the need for him to stay aggressive as the Blazers look to make a playoff push in his post-game interview. Naturally, he had to be drenched in water by his teammates hoping to cool him off after the 71-point explosion.
“We have 22 or 23 games left after this. We need to win as many as possible. Being short-handed, I know it’s going to be a team effort. I gotta do my best at being aggressive and just try to do what I can to make sure we can get some wins. I wanted to be in attack mode, I got it going, and I stayed aggressive… I came out, I saw it go in a few times, and I just stayed aggressive. I didn’t ease up. They’re a competitive team, they play with a lot of energy and they put pressure on you with effort.”
Lillard credited teammates like Matisse Thybulle and Trendon Watford for their contributions to the game. He also emphasized patience and discussed his explosive dunk on Jabari Smith Jr. during the game. His performance also led to a post-game drug test.
Damian Lillard Compared His Performance To Art
In the post-game media press conference, Lillard went further in depth about his history-making performance and what it meant to him, comparing it to art.
“I would say it’s an art to me because there are so many things that go on. Within the team, within the game, within the season, you know it’s a million words for it. There are a lot of ways to describe it and a lot of things that go into it. It’s a lot of pain, a lot of work, a lot of things go into everything and it happens. Everybody feels a different way about what’s happening, and what they see, and I would say that’s art. It has a different meaning for everybody. If 100 people watched this game, they might have 100 different feelings and reactions to it. That speaks a lot about everything that goes into it, the work, the low moments, the high moments, and what’s happening with the team. All of those things could mean so many different things to so many different people and I think art is similar to that,
Lillard became just the 7th player in NBA history to score 70+ points, joining Wilt Chamberlain, Kobe Bryant, David Thompson, Elgin Baylor, Donovan Mitchell, and Devin Booker in that list.

Lillard has been on an incredible run of form, averaging 38.9 points in his last 20 games. Given the recent fan criticisms that Lillard has faced for his championship-winning ambition with the Blazers, this performance should reinforce the fact that Dame will do everything in his power to keep his team competitive. The Blazers are still in grave danger of missing the playoffs, currently sitting with a 29-31 record as the 11th seed in the West.
