Karl Malone is traditionally viewed as one of the best power forwards to have played the game of basketball. However, there is no doubt that he has done some controversial things off the court.
A recent article from Andre Gee of Rolling Stone illustrated a time when Karl Malone harassed Vanessa Bryant in 2004. He was teammates with Kobe Bryant on the Los Angeles Lakers during that time. At the time of the incident, Malone was reportedly wearing cowboy gear outside of Staples Center, where Vanessa Bryant asked him, “Hey cowboy, what you hunting?” Malone’s reply was a strange attempt at flirting, with him saying that he was hunting for “little Mexican girls.”
There were some other instances mentioned by Gee where Malone exhibited inappropriate behavior towards Vanessa Bryant. Rob Pelinka stated that he once told her to sit on his lap, noting that it would be “on the cover of every magazine.” It is clear that these actions were improper, and this behavior is what “fractured” Malone’s relationship with the Bryant family, according to Gee.
Vanessa Bryant Stopped Conversation With Karl Malone After Another Issue
Later on in the article, Gee shared further words from Rob Pelinka, giving an account of the situation between Karl Malone and Vanessa Bryant. He reportedly continued to try and flirt with her, and one of Malone’s comments prompted her to end the conversation with him.
“Vanessa didn’t know what to say because this was the first time she had ever spoken to Malone without Kobe or Kay being around. Karl continued. ‘Do you like me?’ Malone asked her, to which Vanessa said, ‘As my friend, Kay’s husband.’ From there Malone asked Vanessa if she could keep a secret, and that he would like to tell her something. At which point Vanessa told him she was a married woman and he was a married man who was old enough to be her father. To which Malone replied, ‘Oh, like your daddy?’ At that point she told me she ended the conversation.”
It is definitely extremely unfortunate that Vanessa Bryant had to endure these unwanted advances from Karl Malone. This is also far from the only unacceptable behavior that Karl Malone has engaged in. When he was 20, he impregnated a 13-year-old girl. When asked about that incident recently, Karl Malone simply said that he doesn’t care about the backlash.
The fact that Karl Malone made a big appearance during All-Star weekend has made a lot of people uncomfortable. Bomani Jones was one of the prominent critics of the league, including Malone in All-Star festivities. It remains to be seen what the league says on this matter in the future, and perhaps they will issue a statement in the coming weeks.
