It is not big news that the Los Angeles were interested in trading for Kyrie Irving even before the start of the 2022-23 NBA season. They made several inquiries about trading for the former Brooklyn Nets during the previous summer. Unfortunately, no deal was finalized between the two teams.
However, the window reopened when Kyrie Irving recently requested a trade from the Nets. As expected, the Lakers tried to trade for Irving, but no deal was finished, apparently due to Nets owner Joe Tsai’s unwillingness to be involved in a trade with the Purple and Gold.
But that doesn’t mean the Nets didn’t listen to an offer by the Lakers, and according to NBA insider Shams Charania, the organization even presented an unrealistic counteroffer.
Via The Athletic:
The Lakers offered the Nets a package of Westbrook and two first-round picks in 2027 and 2029 for Irving in the last two days, sources with knowledge of the discussions said — to which the Nets informed the Lakers that in order to make an offer to get in the Irving sweepstakes they would require all of their young players such as Austin Reaves and Max Christie and pick swaps in addition to Westbrook and the two first-round picks.
There is no doubt about Kyrie Irving being one of the best players in his position in the league. But the Nets’ asking price was simply too much for the Los Angeles Lakers.
What’s Next For The Los Angeles Lakers?
The Los Angeles Lakers may have lost the race for acquiring Kyrie Irving, but it doesn’t change the truth about the roster needing an upgrade this season. Keeping that in mind, recent reports suggest that the Lakers are still optimistic about making a trade on or before the NBA Trade Deadline.
Hopefully, the Lakers can make a valuable trade sooner rather than later. The organization is currently 25-29 and in the 13th spot in the Western Conference table. It’s high time for the Lakers to go all-in and get the much-needed help around their franchise superstar, LeBron James.
