Kyrie Irving had a fine start to life as a member of the Dallas Mavericks, as he finished with 24 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds in a 110-104 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday. The Mavericks had been desperate to get in a star before the trade deadline and Kyrie showed them flashes of his supreme talent.
The Mavs did get a bit lucky in the sense, that reports indicated Irving’s preference was a move to the Los Angeles Lakers, but Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai wanted to make sure he didn’t get his wish. Considering how bad the relationship between Irving and the Nets had gotten, this doesn’t really come as a huge surprise.
It seems though, that Tsai may have just delayed Kyrie’s move to L.A. by a few months, as The Athletic’s Joe Vardon is of the belief that Irving will be a Laker after this season.
via The Athletic:
“I believe Irving will be a Laker next season.”
If Irving does leave for the Lakers in free agency, it would be absolutely disastrous for the Mavericks. They just gave up two of their best role players in Spencer Dinwiddie and Dorian Finney-Smith to get him, along with some draft capital. It might eventually lead to Luka Doncic wanting to leave as well and we all might look back at this trade as the beginning of the end for the Slovenian in Dallas. On the flip side, if Kyrie does stay and just focuses on basketball, then it’d be a different story altogether.
LeBron James Wants The Lakers To Get Kyrie Irving
It is not just that Kyrie reportedly wants to move to the Lakers, but LeBron James also wants it to happen. Vardon again states that James has made it clear that he desires a reunion and we know the Lakers are open to having Kyrie onboard after they made a pretty solid offer for him, which the Nets rejected.
If a move does happen, you have to think at this point that it would be a sign-and-trade, after the Lakers made all those moves on deadline day. They don’t have the cap space to sign him in free agency to the kind of contract he wants and it would at least help the Mavs get something in return, but it still won’t be equal to what they just gave up.
