Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks hit some great highs in 2021 when they made the Eastern Conference Finals, but it has been all downhill since then. They were eliminated in the first round last year and might not even make the playoffs this time around.
There have been murmurs for a while now regarding discontent in the locker room, with Young being at the center of it. It was reported last month that head coach Nate McMillian and some of the players don’t like Young and rumors followed soon after that he could request a trade at the end of the season. Now, a source has told Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus that he thinks Trae will want out after the season.
via Bleacher Report:
“I think Trae will want out after the season,” one NBA source said. “The Hawks probably try to get out of John Collins and others by the deadline, but Trae’s a long shot. Maybe the [Lakers] in July with his ties to Klutch [Sports].”
Atlanta already acquired a potential replacement in Dejounte Murray. While this may not be a trade deadline topic, keep an eye on the Hawks and their relationship with Young over the coming months.
They do have a replacement for him at point guard in Dejounte Murray, as Pincus points out. A move to join LeBron James on the Los Angeles Lakers in the offseason seems rather doubtful, however, as they just won’t have the assets to pull off a trade. Young signed a 5-year extension in 2021, and it is going to take a massive haul to land him. What is clear, though, is that the relationship between him and the Hawks has been deteriorating for a while now.
Trae Young Was Fined By The Hawks During The 2022 Playoffs
The first sign that things were headed south between Trae and the Hawks seems to have come in the 2022 playoffs against the Miami Heat. After a loss in Game 2 in Miami, Trae chartered a private flight back to Atlanta and didn’t travel with the rest of the team, which led to him being fined.
Despite some of these issues behind the scenes, there is no doubt that there will be quite a few teams interested in Young if he does demand a trade in the offseason. He is an exceptional offensive talent and can be lethal in the right situation.
