Hakeem Olajuwon has made a big revelation about his NBA career, which sounds really crazy now that we know he’s one of the greatest centers in NBA history. The Houston Rockets legend made a big impact on the game, even after his retirement, and whenever he speaks, everybody listens.

That’s what’s happened recently, as Hakeem has been very vocal about big men in the NBA, criticizing Joel Embiid for shooting too many 3-pointers when he should take advantage of his strength to beat rivals at the post.

He also talked about Nikola Jokic, praising him for not letting that art die and playing the game like it’s supposed to be played. That’s not the only thing Olajuwon has had to say, and now, he has some big bombs to drop.

Hakeem Olajuwon Makes A Bold Revelation About His NBA Career

During his interview with Chris Ballard of Sports Illustrated, the 2x NBA champion made a big revelation, explaining that he would have liked to have the freedom to play away from the paint, engaging more in the creation of plays.

Then Olajuwon says something even more surprising—something that makes me pause: “I never really liked being a center.”

In fact, Olajuwon says he totally understands why the game turned out the way it did. “The traditional big-man game is boring!” he says. “I didn’t want to play center. I wanted to handle the ball like guards. When I played in the summertime, I got the rebound and I didn’t want to pass to the guard. I’m bringing it down! I’m freelancing! That’s more fun. You’re more engaged in the game.”

Right now, we have 7-footers doing incredible things on the court, like Kevin Durant and Jokic, but also, the new generation of players is showing this type of talent, like Bol Bol and the overhyped French prospect Victor Wembanyama.

Hakeem was already impactful on the game with his footwork and the things he did at the paint, but if he was given the freedom to take the ball down and be more involved in the creation, he would have been even better and a pioneer of the things that KD, Jokic, Bol, and Wembanyama are doing right now.
