Shaquille O’Neal’s NBA career still leaves people in shock and awe because we had never seen anyone at that size with that mobility before. Shaq was over 7 feet tall and came into the league being able to move like a guard and dominate opponents regardless.

As he aged into his body, Shaq decided to focus on being as strong and heavy as possible to be able to sustain the beating he would receive in the paint every game. As his career went on, Shaq just kept getting fatter until he was objectively out of shape and retiring from the sport.

We’ve seen O’Neal put on weight in retirement (as is his right) but the man is looking to change that now. Shaq claims to have lost 40 pounds, causing a noticeable change in his physique. He aims to lose 20 more.

Fat jokes about Shaq and Charles Barkley have been a common occurrence on Inside the NBA but it seems Shaq might do his best to get himself out of that conversation.

Shaquille O’Neal Entering His Golden Years

For most of us, watching Shaq dominate on an NBA court isn’t as old a memory as other players. Shaq not only played through the ’90s, we saw him dominate into the 2000s before petering out of the league in 2010. Shaq will turn 51 in a few months and is probably realizing he needs to treat his body better.

O’Neal has been taught terrific lessons about life from his father but it is time he uses those lessons in a non-basketball sense to improve himself. O’Neal has spoken about the impact of the passing of his sister and Kobe Bryant recently and how it has been affecting him even in 2022. Working out and improving himself might give him the comfort he seeks.
