The Portland Trail Blazers had a great start to the 2022-23 NBA season, and the credit for it goes to none other than the return of Damian Lillard. Dame missed most of the last season due to an injury, but this season Lillard has proven that he is still one of the best players at his position.

Lillard himself believes that he is the second-best shooter behind Stephen Curry, and there is a genuine case for it. But when most people talk about Lillard, they think about someone who is a super-loyal player. Although he has been criticized for it, Dame refuses to give up on the Trail Blazers and continues playing for them.

As a result, it has obviously led to many believing that Damian Lillard is with the team only for money. But is that true? The 32-year-old decided to break that bubble himself.

Damian Lillard On His Loyalty To The Portland Trail Blazers

Finding a loyal player in the current NBA can be a herculean task at times for franchises. So finding someone like Lillard, who has spent his entire career with the Trail Blazers, is certainly rare. But as we mentioned earlier, many misinterpret the reason behind Lillard staying with the team.

The 6x NBA All-Star decided to shut down these rumors and gave the reason behind his loyalty to the Trail Blazers in a recent advertisement for Adidas.

“I think people get the loyalty thing about me wrong all the time. They think I’m being so loyal to an organization and so loyal you know, a team. The loyalty is ultimately to myself, to who I am. And the person that I am is to, you know, be willing to sink with the ship. Especially when the ship has done right by me, you know what I mean? To just be true and to see things through and to continue to fight the fight. This team hasn’t won since ’77. And I want to be a part of what brings that back. … It’s an easy thing for any of those people to say because they don’t to come walk that walk. You know, they don’t have to come live the consequences of that decision. You would never see me making a decision based off of outside people, because I sit with myself first, because I’m the person that’s going have to live with that decision every day.”

Lillard was certainly honest about the decision of why he is still staying with the Portland Trail Blazers and the consequences of it. He recently surpassed Clyde Drexler to become the leader of most points for the franchise and will continue to add more such accolades to his resume. But until he can lead the organization to an NBA title, people will question his decision to continue playing for them.
