Amid a 21-6 start, the Boston Celtics have been about as close to unstoppable as any NBA basketball team can get. This season, the Celtics have been historically great on offense and Jayson Tatum has looked like the front-runner for this season’s MVP race.
Still, when you ask the Celtics what they’re thinking about 27 games in, there’s a chance it will be the Golden State Warriors, who recently beat them in their first rematch after the 2022 NBA Finals.
In a recent chat with The Athletic, Celtics star Jayson Tatum looked back on the Finals series and explained how he’s using it to fuel his current run.
Yet just one day after “The Jays” took some time after practice to share their perspective with The Athletic on this disquieting Celtics offseason, they were humbled and hammered by Golden State yet again, this time in the first rematch since their NBA Finals loss back in June. It was a brutal reminder that their basketball souls remain unfulfilled.
The pursuit of that elusive first title remains as painful as ever.
“We literally gave everything that we had, and to come up short just killed everybody,” Tatum said of the finals loss that was so fresh in their memories at Chase Center on Saturday night.
Can Jayson Tatum Lead The Celtics To A Championship This Season?
The 2022 Finals ended in 6 games after the Warriors won the last three to take home the prize. Had just one or two of those games gone a different way, everything could have changed and we could be talking about the Cs going back-to-back.
Instead, they came up short — but it has really only made them more dangerous to the competition. Now, more than ever before, Tatum is focused on bringing home the trophy.
“While we’re having fun and happy with the way we’re playing, nobody in that locker is celebrating or satisfied [with] we’re at,” said Tatum. “None of this means anything if we don’t hang a banner. We realize that we’ve got the best record; we’re 21-5; with that comes the decision every night to play the right way, to play as hard as we can on both ends.”
It seems like Tatum really learned from his Finals tip last year. after experiencing heartbreak and defeat firsthand, he knows how badly he wants to avoid it.
This season, his team looks better than ever and Tatum is going to be a hard guy to handle in any 7-game series. But until the Celtics close the deal, nobody in that franchise will really be satisfied.
