James Wiseman was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, and thus far, his NBA career has been mixed. Though his athleticism and skill set are clearly there, he has simply not been a good fit for the Golden State Warriors.

Due to his struggles with the team, perhaps the Golden State Warriors moving James Wiseman could be best for both parties. Wiseman would be able to get a fresh start on another franchise, while the team would be able to get immediate contributors who can help their pursuit of a championship this season. It was previously reported that James Wiseman was the most likely Warriors player to get traded.

A recent report from Sean Deveney of Heavy revealed that the Golden State Warriors could end up trading James Wiseman for a number of players. Notable names included in the list were defensive center Jakob Poeltl and 3 and D guard Gary Trent Jr.

There has been chatter in NBA circles about the possibility of the Warriors trading Wiseman, with more experienced big men—swapping Jakob Poeltl of the Spurs for Wiseman is one trade possibility that has made the rounds—coming back in the deal.

The Warriors also could look to move Wiseman for general depth, which is a need for a team that ranks last in the NBA in bench net rating (minus-7.2). The likes of Toronto’s Gary Trent Jr., Utah’s Malik Beasley or Memphis’ Dillon Brooks would be ideal, though the Warriors might have to give up too much (some combination of Donte DiVincenzo, Jonathan Kuminga and/or Moses Moody) to make salaries match for a deal to work.

Knowing what a good fit Gary Payton II was before leaving for a payday in Portland this summer, the Warriors even could look to swap Wiseman to the Blazers to bring him back.

There is no doubt that the Golden State Warriors need to improve their bench unit, and trading for any of those players should do the trick. Jakob Poeltl could also potentially start in Kevon Looney’s place, as he is an elite rim protector and solid rebounder. It remains to be seen if the Warriors do, in fact, trade James Wiseman, but it seems as though it is definitely a possibility.

James Wiseman Will Get Reps In The G-League

Recently, it was reported that James Wiseman would be in the G-League for some time, and that could actually be a good opportunity for him to develop his game and improve as a player. As Jordan Poole said, Wiseman will get the opportunity to take almost any shot and have plenty of touches.

“I told him it’s not a demotion. It’s not a punishment. He’s going to go down there and shoot as many shots as he wants, get as many touches as he wants, work on as many moves as he wants.”

Jordan Poole obviously has some experience with being in the G-League, and this sort of perspective is extremely valuable. Hopefully, James Wiseman can do well in the G-League, and prove that he deserves a spot in the Warriors’ rotation.

As of right now, James Wiseman is still a member of the Golden State Warriors. However, if the Warriors don’t see development from him after his stint in the G-League, moving him could be an appealing option for the team.
