When we talk about the legacy of Kevin Durant in the NBA, most think of him as one of the best players to ever play in the league. But due to his move to the Golden State Warriors in 2016, his legacy took a huge hit. It hasn’t helped his case that KD hasn’t won even an NBA title without the help of Stephen Curry and the Warriors.
Anyway, today, our focus is not on his time with the Warriors. Instead, we will be taking a look at something that the Slim Reaper said pretty recently. Yes, we are referring to the quote where Durant claimed that his legacy in the NBA will be remembered by what he taught the likes of Cam Thomas and Andre Roberson.
“My legacy is predicated on what Cam Thomas is learning from me and what he’ll take away to help him by the time he’s in his 10th year. That’s my legacy. What I did with Andre Roberson, the confidence I helped him build when he was in the league. That's my legacy.” – Kevin Durant pic.twitter.com/xTUw6LGiGQ

My legacy is predicated on what Cam Thomas is learning from me and what he’ll take away to help him by the time he’s in his 10th year. That’s my legacy. What I did with Andre Roberson, the confidence I helped him build when he was in the league. That’s my legacy.
There is no harm in a player of KD’s status passing his learnings to the next generation. But that being his entire legacy doesn’t sound good.
Chris Broussard Calls Out Kevin Durant
Considering the fact that Durant is widely regarded as one of the most gifted scorers in the history of the NBA, many were pissed off by the Slim Reaper’s take on his own legacy. Among them was NBA analyst Chris Broussard.
(Starts at 7:20)
“Kevin Durant is obviously an all-time great player, a Hall of Famer, easy. What he said about Cam Thomas and Andre Roberson, that’s the legacy of a Udonis Haslem. That’s the legacy of a locker room guy. … That’s a legacy for a role player.
I don’t hear many people with KD’s ability talking about that. I hear Jordan, Magic, LeBron, Bird, Isiah, Kobe, Shaq, they talked about rings and I wanna be the best player ever. … If it’s really how KD is and feels, that may be why he hasn’t led a team to a championship or it may be a cop-out. … The players on his level aren’t judged by that.”
As pointed out by Broussard, there are no doubts about KD being an all-time great player. But his take on his own legacy doesn’t seem apt. If Durant fails to win another NBA title before retiring from the league, this quote will be held against him by fans for KD not having the killer instinct.
