NBA MVP Award Winners From 2011 To 2020: LeBron James, Stephen Curry And Giannis Antetokounmpo Dominated In This Era

The past decade or so has seen a massive change in the NBA, from rules to playing style. Nowadays, players have different responsibilities on the court and are actually able to put up monster statistics thanks to the pace and space of the game. That is why, in terms of individual brilliance and player statistics, superstar players have been exceptional over the past decade. The best of talents, therefore, end up winning MVP awards thanks to individual statistics, team record, and all-around impact.

We have collected all the MVP award winners from 2011 to 2020, and it is very interesting to notice that three players completely owned the decade in terms of individual dominance on the court. In fact, three players have captured 6 out of the 10 awards over the decade. Here are the NBA MVP winners from the 2011 season until the 2020 season.

2010-11 MVP Award Winner – Derrick Rose

Stats: 25.0 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 7.7 APG, 1.0 SPG, 0.6 BPG

The streets will never forget how excellent Derrick Rose was in his MVP season because he captivated fans and analysts with his incredible athleticism and jaw-dropping plays. Watching Rose was also exciting because he was a point guard who literally wanted the ball on every occasion to score or assist for others.

The superstar point guard became the youngest MVP in NBA history, posting an impressive 25.0 PPG and 7.7 APG at 22 years old. Thanks to the offensive brilliance of Rose, the Chicago Bulls were back to being title contenders for the first time since Michael Jordan and finished with a league-leading 62-20 record.

2011-12 MVP Award Winner – LeBron James

Stats: 27.1 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 6.2 APG, 1.9 SPG, 0.8 BPG

LeBron James’ second MVP season was one of significant importance to his own career. James became a villain when he joined the Miami Heat in 2011 and also lost in the NBA Finals, and embraced the villain role with a raw vigor.

LeBron shut out all the noise and simply dominated the court as he knows best. The King was not only physically unstoppable at age 27, but he found a way to make an even bigger impact on the game thanks to the presence of other stars on his side. Of course, James capped off his third MVP season with his first NBA title at the end of the postseason.

2012-13 MVP Award Winner – LeBron James

Stats: 26.8 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 7.3 APG, 1.7 SPG, 0.9 BPG

LeBron James would capture his 4th MVP award and second straight with the Miami Heat by solidifying himself as the best player in the world. Finally, James was an NBA champion and rode that swagger into the 2013 season.

There was no stopping LeBron because he was at his absolute peak at a physical level and also began showing glimpses of a very efficient jump-shooting stroke. There was simply no answer for James in Miami, especially since he was bolstered by the presence of Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. James led the Heat to an impressive 66-16 record which ranked 1st in the league.

2013-14 MVP Award Winner – Kevin Durant

Stats: 32.0 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 5.5 APG, 1.3 SPG, 0.7 BPG

A superstar swingman with some of the most unstoppable offensive skills in NBA history, Kevin Durant was on a tear during the 2014 season. KD captured his 4th scoring title during the year and led the Oklahoma City Thunder to the second seed in the Western Conference.

Durant also began staking his claim as the best player in the world, challenging the throne of LeBron James in that regard. KD was unstoppable during the year, averaging 50.3% from the field, 39.1% from three, and 87.3% from the free-throw line.

2014-15 MVP Award Winner – Stephen Curry

Stats: 23.8 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 7.7 APG, 2.0 SPG, 0.2 BPG

After making his first All-Star Team in 2014 with the Golden State Warriors, Curry followed it up with a spectacular MVP season by kickstarting a new era in the NBA. With Steph at the helm, the Warriors had the best record in the NBA at 67-15.

As usual, the best player on the best team received the most MVP consideration and it was not far-fetched that Steph was the most impactful player in the game. The Golden State Warriors superstar shot a ridiculous 44.3% from three while attempting 8 threes a game, and Steph’s run would only continue as the seasons would pass.

2015-16 MVP Award Winner – Stephen Curry

Stats: 30.1 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 6.7 APG, 2.1 SPG, 0.2 BPG

Stephen Curry not only led the league in scoring on ridiculous 50-40-90 shooting splits, but he was the catalyst behind a Golden State Warriors side that won 73 games in the regular season. Curry was officially the greatest shooter ever by 2016, and he ran away with the unanimous MVP award.

Curry was simply unstoppable on the court, and he was far and away the most impactful player in the NBA. Armed with defenders such as Andre Iguodala and Draymond Green and other shooters such as Klay Thompson and Harrison Barnes, Steph had a ton of fun ripping defenses apart with his unselfish play and long-range marksmanship.

2016-17 MVP Award Winner – Russell Westbrook

Stats: 31.6 PPG, 10.7 RPG, 10.4 APG, 1.6 SPG, 0.4 BPG

With Kevin Durant no longer in town, Russell Westbrook immediately became a massive fan favorite. The superstar point guard had to carry a franchise on his back, and after years of being a contender, Russ had to carry a very average squad into the playoffs again to prove a point.

Russ succeeded, carrying the Thunder into the postseason and having arguably the greatest statistical season in NBA history by a guard. The point guard averaged a triple-double for the first time since Oscar Robertson and also led the league in scoring.

2017-18 MVP Award Winner – James Harden

Stats: 30.4 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 8.8 APG, 1.8 SPG, 0.7 BPG

James Harden probably had a shot at winning the MVP award a few times in his career, but there was no doubt he deserved the award in 2018. The Beard was simply unstoppable, scoring the ball anytime he wanted, and earned his first of three straight scoring titles.

Alongside Chris Paul, James Harden led the Houston Rockets to the best record in the Western Conference and eventually carried them to the Western Conference Finals. All year long, the Rockets were the only team that had a shot at stopping the Golden State Warriors and Harden deserves the bulk of the credit for that.

2018-19 MVP Award Winner – Giannis Antetokounmpo

Stats: 27.7 PPG, 12.5 RPG, 5.9 APG, 1.3 SPG, 1.5 BPG

In the 2019 season, Giannis Antetokounmpo began staking his claim as arguably the most talented and dominant player in the league. The superstar forward had a monster double-double, carrying the Bucks to the best record in the NBA and 1st in the East.

Giannis was spectacular on both ends of the floor, and we started seeing a player who could become the face of the NBA one day. An incredible athlete that can defend all five positions and also attack the rim without resistance, Giannis would win his first of two straight MVP awards.

2019-20 MVP Award Winner – Giannis Antetokounmpo

Stats: 29.5 PPG, 13.6 RPG, 5.6 APG, 1.0 SPG, 1.0 BPG

For the second straight time in his career, Giannis won the league MVP award. The dominant forward put up yet another ridiculous double-double and led the Milwaukee Bucks to the best record in the NBA and 1st in the Eastern Conference.

As expected, Giannis dominated the court better than anyone could. Even if Milwaukee would falter in the playoffs after the season and The Greek Freak would have more critics than he has now, he was the undisputed best player during the regular season and that is why he also captured the Defensive Player of the Year award.
