James Wiseman was the Warriors’ No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. While he has shown some flashes during his rookie year, he has not yet played this season due to injury.
Steve Kerr has recently commented on James Wiseman’s timetable, claiming that there’s “no blueprint” for how he should return. He also added that he thought Wiseman would be back by this point in the season. Josh Schrock of NBC Sports relayed the news.
There’s just no blueprint for this. This is such a unique set of circumstances, and we will just have to see how it plays out, and we thought it was going to play out very differently. We thought he would be back by now. I just feel so bad for James. He is working every day. He is keeping a really good, positive spirit about him. But we want so badly for him to get his career started and off the ground. The poor guy is dealing with the injury, with the knee, and we just don’t know when he is going to turn the corner.
I do know that when he is back, the ability that he has to give us that lob threat can be huge,” “You think about all the shooting we have – you throw Steph and Klay and Otto Porter and Wiggs and all these guys who are shooting great from the 3-point line – you add a lob threat, that’s a pretty devastating weapon. It would be great to see what that looks like, but we’ll just have to see how it all plays out.
Hopefully, we see James Wiseman return soon. As Steve Kerr pointed out, the Warriors are missing an athletic center to be a lob threat around their shooters. Wiseman will have much better spacing this year than he did his rookie year, which should allow him to thrive.
The Golden State Warriors can afford to let James Wiseman take his time with recovery, as they are already a top-tier team without him. Klay Thompson is reacclimating to the league, while Andrew Wiggins has been selected as an All-Star starter. Life is good for the Warriors right now, and James Wiseman can make the team even better.
