Tonight will be a massive night for the Los Angeles Lakers. The Crypto.com Arena has the hottest ticket in town: the Lakers’ game against the Utah Jazz. The game itself isn’t headline-worthy, but it will mark Luka Doncic’s debut as a superstar. Doncic’s former teammate and mentor, Dirk Nowitzki, will be in attendance.

Nowitzki confirmed the report of his attendance of the game, while still pledging his lifelong allegiance and loyalty to the Mavericks franchise. He just wants to show support to Luka Doncic on a big night for him.

I will always be a Mav for life, but had to come support my guy 77 @luka7doncic in the first game of his new chapter!

— Dirk Nowitzki (@swish41) February 11, 2025

Dirk Nowitzki played his final season with the Dallas Mavericks in 2018-19, the same season the Mavericks drafted Luka Doncic. Nowitzki not only ended his time in the NBA but also focused on passing the torch to Doncic as the new face of the Mavericks and the next great European star in the NBA. Since Nowitzki’s retirement, Doncic has more than lived up to the hype of being an NBA star.

Doncic would go on to become a five-time All-Star and All-NBA player for the Mavericks and take them to two Western Conference Finals and one NBA Finals run. Doncic looked like he would be a Maverick for life, just like Nowitzki was. However, in one of the most controversial and unexpected trades in NBA history, Doncic was sent to the Lakers in exchange for a package for Anthony Davis.

There is still a lot of ambiguity as to why the Mavericks would let a 25-year-old future Hall of Famer leave the team. The latest reports surrounding the matter suggest that the Mavericks didn’t want to reward Doncic’s lack of discipline on and off the court with a $350 million supermax contract extension this summer, which he was eligible for.

On the Lakers, Doncic seemingly has a strong and supporting front office. So much so that even LeBron James’ camp noticed how quickly Rob Pelinka and the Lakers moved to improve the roster after Doncic’s arrival, something they had not been doing for him the last few years. However, James has kept up public appearances, even defending Doncic after Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont slammed his attitude in a recent interview.

Doncic’s debut with the Lakers will be an incredible sight as he gets to share the court with LeBron James, one of his idols in the sport and the man the Lakers hope will mentor Doncic into being the perfect face of their franchise for the next decade. The King spoke several times about giving Anthony Davis the keys to the Lakers, but that never happened for whatever reason.

With Doncic, the Lakers have found not just the short-term but long-term replacement for LeBron James, who is nearing the twilight of his career and won’t be in the NBA for that much longer. Pairing him with LeBron James is actually a very similar move to the Mavericks pairing Luka with Dirk Nowitzki during his rookie year.

Luka has expressed his excitement about playing with LeBron James before. And tonight, after all the speculation and opinions have been heard, Doncic gets to put them all to rest as he dons the purple and gold for the first time in his career. Lakers fans will be hoping that this is the start of a long partnership between the two sides.
