Nowitzki not only ended his time in the NBA but also focused on passing the torch to Doncic as the new face of the Mavericks and the next great European star in the NBA. So much so that even LeBron James’ camp noticed how quickly Rob Pelinka and the Lakers moved to improve the roster after Doncic’s arrival, something they had not been doing for him the last few years. However, James has kept up public appearances, even defending Doncic after Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont slammed his attitude in a recent interview.

With Doncic, the Lakers have found not just the short-term but long-term replacement for LeBron James, who is nearing the twilight of his career and won’t be in the NBA for that much longer. Pairing him with LeBron James is actually a very similar move to the Mavericks pairing Luka with Dirk Nowitzki during his rookie year.
