Kobe Bryant is sadly no longer with us, but the Los Angeles Lakers star made sure to leave his mark not only on the game of basketball but the whole world. Kobe is a worldly-known man that won’t ever be forgotten.
One of the biggest lessons he taught us was never to give up, no matter how hard things were, you should never give up until you achieve your goal, even if you had people telling you that you couldn’t do something because it was impossible.
Well, Kobe had a great story of how somebody tried to persuade him from pursuing his dream of going to the NBA, but as usual, he didn’t listen.
“I had a counselor, a guidance counselor,” Bryant told CNBC in 2016, the year he finished his career. “He asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up. I said I wanted to be an NBA player, I was probably 10 years old.”
“He said, ‘You know, that’s not very realistic,’ and I said, ‘Well, this is what I want to be,’” Bryant said. But the counselor insisted, ”‘I think you should be something else.’”
Luckily for Kobe and the rest of us, he didn’t listen to those words and continued focused on his dream. He would go to the NBA a couple of years later, going straight out of college, doing something ‘crazy’ at the time. He would join the Los Angeles Lakers, where he once again proved that hard work and discipline can open a lot of doors.
Despite struggling during his first year with the team, Kobe bounced back, became a big figure in Los Angeles, winning five titles, taking the team to be the last one to three-peat in the NBA, while becoming one of the best to ever play the game. If you ask me, that counselor was wrong in his beliefs.
