In recent memory, we have seen a lot of players requesting trades shortly after signing long-term extensions with NBA franchises. The most recent example of that is Kevin Durant, who recently requested a trade despite having four years left on his contract with the Brooklyn Nets.

A contract is generally an agreement to play for the franchise for a specified amount of time. Many fans have expressed frustration about players being able to leave extremely early into their contracts. Of course, sometimes some circumstances warrant a player requesting a trade, such as a franchise not being able to build around them. However, most people will agree that those requests shouldn’t happen one season into an extension.

Adam Silver has recently spoken on Kevin Durant’s trade request, claiming that the league doesn’t like to “see players requesting trade” and also isn’t happy about the trade request playing out “the way it is”.

Adam Silver on Kevin Durant asking for a trade: “We don’t like to see players requesting trades and we don’t like to see it playing out the way it is.”

Adam Silver says the NBA will talk to the NBPA and fix this issue of players requesting trades.

It remains to be seen what the league will do about the issue of players requesting trades in the future. Adam Silver does mention that the NBA will talk to the NBPA to try and find a solution. This issue will likely be part of the next CBA negotiations.

Perhaps we’ll see the Brooklyn Nets will get a solid package in return for Kevin Durant. However, Adrian Wojnarowski has recently reported that the main teams trying to bid for Kevin Durant such as the Raptors and the Suns haven’t gotten any closer to a trade, and it looks as though this process may end up dragging on for a while. Hopefully, though, it does end quickly, and we’ll see where Kevin Durant ends up getting traded to in the future.
