James Harden might be one of the more underappreciated players in the modern NBA, considering he was quickly the league’s best offensive player for a few years in his prime. One of the reasons for that is that many fans felt his patented stepback which earned him a lot of points, was an illegal move.
Many have suggested that he travels when he takes a stepback three. And speaking about it once, Allen Iverson said he couldn’t have used the move during his playing days, claiming that if he could, he would have made even more shots than he already did.
“I wish you could it back then when I was playing because I would get an open shot every time,” Iverson said. “I ain’t lying, dawg. That stepback that James Harden doing, is that a walk, travel… Just imagine if you could do this.
“The way I look at it is, just say you get caught up. And you lose your dribble. And everybody denying the pass out and all that and you can’t do nothing with the ball. I think it’s the same thing, you just stepping away from the dude and shooting. That’s what it look like to me.”
Allen Iverson averaged 26.7 points per game for his career, even without having that shot in his arsenal. No wonder he wishes he could do it too. The debate about whether it’s a legal move or not has raged on for years now. But it seems to be accepted these days. Many other stars like Luka Doncic have picked up on it too.
James Harden Has Embarrassed Players With That Move
Whether it’s a travel or not, its effectiveness cannot be denied. James Harden averages 2.8 made three-pointers per game in his career, with a lot of them being stepbacks. He has climbed up to third place in the all-time list for made three-point shots behind Stephen Curry and Ray Allen as well. What’s more, he has embarrassed the league’s best defenders with it, like Marcus Smart.

Harden is currently trying to get traded away from Allen Iverson’s old team, the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Los Angeles Clippers seem like a possible destination. He would surely not appreciate having his signature move questioned, but the Beard has bigger things to worry about at this point in his NBA career.
