He highlighted his appreciation for the intense support and high expectations that come with being part of the storied franchise.

Phil Handy, who had been an assistant coach for the Lakers for the past five years, was recently let go following the departure of head coach Darvin Ham. Handy’s influence on the team, including Davis, was significant during his tenure.

Since joining the Lakers five years ago, Davis has established himself as a key player. During this period, he has been selected as an All-Star three times, made two All-NBA teams, and earned two All-Defensive Team selections.

Most notably, he was instrumental in leading the Lakers to an NBA Championship in 2020. Davis has averaged 24.7 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.2 steals, and 2.2 blocks per game while shooting 53.3% from the field and 27.9% from three-point range.

Despite his remarkable performance, Davis has faced challenges, primarily due to injuries that have hindered his ability to take over the reins from LeBron James completely.

There was an expectation that Davis would become the primary option after his second year with the team, but consistent injuries have delayed this transition. Nonetheless, over the last two years, Davis has gradually taken on a more significant role, preparing for the eventual transition as LeBron approaches 40.

As the Lakers gear up for another season, Davis is poised to step into the role of the team’s leading player. His goal is to stay healthy and continue his impressive contributions on both ends of the court.

With the unwavering support and high expectations of Lakers fans, Davis embraces the challenge and looks forward to leading the team to further success. The rollercoaster ride with the fans, filled with highs and lows, is something Davis cherishes as he continues to build his legacy in Los Angeles.

Anthony Davis Needs To Become The First Option On The Lakers

As LeBron James enters his 22nd NBA season, turning 40 in December, it is crucial for Anthony Davis to assume the role of the first option for the Los Angeles Lakers. While LeBron remains an all-time great, Davis’s emergence as the primary offensive and defensive force is essential for the Lakers’ sustained success.

On the offensive end, Davis has shown increased aggression over the past two years. When he is in peak form, there is virtually no defense capable of stopping him. His versatility and skill set make him a matchup nightmare for opponents. The new Lakers head coach, JJ Redick, has emphasized his commitment to focusing on Davis, ensuring he gets easier looks and opportunities to dominate.

This strategic shift not only maximizes Davis’s potential but also significantly benefits LeBron. As LeBron’s career extends into unprecedented longevity, reducing his workload during the regular season becomes critical. Allowing Davis to shoulder more offensive responsibilities can help preserve LeBron’s energy for the playoffs, where his experience and leadership are invaluable.

Defensively, Davis is already the Lakers’ anchor. His ability to protect the rim, switch onto smaller players, and disrupt opposing offenses is unmatched. His presence on the defensive end provides the Lakers with immense flexibility, enabling them to adapt to various defensive schemes effectively.

However, the key to Davis’s effectiveness in his expanded role is his health. Last season, Davis played 76 games, the most he has managed in recent years. Maintaining his health and availability is paramount for the Lakers’ aspirations. A consistent presence on the court will allow Davis to establish rhythm and continuity, crucial elements for any player taking on a primary role.

In summary, for the Lakers to optimize their performance and prolong LeBron’s career, Anthony Davis must become the first option. His offensive prowess, combined with his already stellar defensive contributions, positions him perfectly to lead the team. Ensuring Davis remains healthy and focused will be essential for the Lakers’ pursuit of another championship.
