Anthony Edwards will have a lot of Wolves’ company at the 2024 All-Star game, as teammate Karl-Anthony Towns and head coach Chris Finch will also be in the Western Conference locker room. Edwards has a suggestion for Finch, saying he will raise his voice if starters such as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander started shooting mid-range shots.

“I think we’re just going to take all the mid-rangers out of the game. If one of the starters, like Shai or somebody, shoots a midrange, I’mma be like, ‘Finchy, we don’t allow those right there.’ It should be fun.”

Edwards and Towns have both been named as All-Star reserves behind the starting lineup of Luka Doncic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Nikola Jokic. Chris Finch will be the head coach for the West as the Wolves have earned the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference a week before the All-Star break is here.

Edwards also spoke about his relationship with Coach Finch and how he holds his players accountable.

“He coaches his players. He’s not like a coach who lets us off the hook or tries to sugarcoat stuff for us. He really coaches hard. He holds everybody accountable, and we need that, starting from the head. He’s the head of the snake. We need that.”

Edwards is averaging 25.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 5.1 assists this season, being named for his second All-Star game. The former No. 1 overall pick is considered to be one of the league’s future superstars and has made the Wolves the most relevant they’ve been since the Kevin Garnett days.

Towns’ contribution as the No. 2 option has been integral, as he finally has a star alongside him to drag the Wolves out of the bottom of the West.

Eastern Conference Head Coach Dilemma

The Eastern Conference doesn’t have a cut-and-dry situation with their head coach this season. While Chris Finch earned his spot over Mark Daigneault, Tyronn Lue, and Michael Malone, the East’s deserving representative has declined to participate. Joe Mazzulla and the Celtics staff should be representing the East this year as the No. 1 seed in the NBA, but the honor was passed on to No. 2 seed head coach Milwaukee Bucks after Mazzula declined.

The problem that arises here is that the Bucks recently fired Adrian Griffin Sr. and new coach Doc Rivers has gone 1-3 since taking the job. Rivers already commented about being uncomfortable at being given this role when he hasn’t earned it. He will send his All-Star ring and bonus to coach Griffin given this is his achievement.

“That is ridiculously bad. It really is. Well, Adrian’s going to get some money, that’s for sure. And a ring. It’s one of these quirky things. I think there should be a rule somehow that someone else does it other than me. Maybe I’ll send my staff and I’ll go on vacation… I’m going to run that by Adam Silver. I think Adam’s a good man. I think he’ll understand.”

Tom Thibodeau or Nick Nurse couldn’t usurp the struggling Bucks for the No. 2 seed just yet, as the Knicks are climbing out of being around .500 to end 2023 and the 76ers have lost Joel Embiid for the foreseeable future. Rivers will be a reluctant coach for the East, but at least he gets to further bond with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard, both All-Star starters.
