Amid a strong campaign for Team USA this summer, Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards is putting the world on notice. In the words of former Lakers guard Nick Young, the 22-year-old swingman is on track to become the next Michael Jordan.

“The league is about to be Anthony Edwards. This is Anthony Edwards league now, the new MJ. That boy looks just like MJ out there,” said Young. “They should have gave it to Anthony Edwards. They would have never lost to Lithuania.”

Edwards has been the alpha dog for Team USA all summer long, impressing fans, coaches, and fellow players with averages of 19.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, and a team-high 2.0 steals per game. “He’s one of those guys who stays confident regardless of what’s happening for him and for the team,” said USA coach Steve Kerr. “You always know he’s going to keep attacking, stay aggressive.”

Of course, Edwards has been even better with the Timberwolves. Despite the shortcomings of the team as a whole, Ant has been excellent for them, especially this past season when he put up a career-high 24.6 points per game on 45% shooting.

Is Edwards Really The Reincarnated Jordan?

As arguably the greatest player of all time, Michael Jordan is the epitome of basketball greatness and it’s not often that a 22-year-old player with a single All-Star appearance gets compared in the same breath with him.

But when you look at the numbers, Anthony Edwards is actually beating Jordan in several categories. At 22 years old, MJ was in just his second year in the league that was cut short due to a broken foot he suffered during the 1985-1986 season. While he managed to average nearly 30 points as a rookie, and 37 in year three, sophomore Jordan only averaged 22 a game and he was far from the “perfect” player many fans remember him as today. But when you look at Jordan and Edwards comparatively, you cannot deny that they do share some similarities — the biggest of which is an insatiable desire to win.

For MJ, it really didn’t start until the 1991 playoffs when he was 28 years old. That’s when he won his first of six titles with the Bulls. For Edwards, there is still time before he is expected to win but there is no doubt that he’s ready to embrace the challenge of everything that comes with it.

The Future Is Bright For Anthony Edwards

With only three seasons under his belt, Anthony Edwards still has a lot to prove before he lives up to the MJ comparisons, but the guy is off to a great start so far. As he builds up his experience and expands his game, Edwards will only keep getting better as time goes on. This offseason, we’re already seeing some amazing growth from him as a leader on Team USA. The question now is, what comes next for his Timberwolves?

We saw last season how poorly they all played together and there’s way no out of it now. Karl-Anthony Towns, Rudy Gobert, and the rest will have to find a way to make things work or the cycle of mediocrity will continue for the Timberwolves franchise. But if Anthony Edwards is really “that guy,” he will rally this team to victory just like MJ did with the Bulls several decades ago.
