Austin Reaves seemed to take a sly shot at his former head coach Darvin Ham in a recent interview via Zoom call with media to talk about playing in the American Century Championship golf tournament next month, according to Daniel Starkand.
Reaves was asked about who would win the NBA championship, and the best teams in the league. Reaves used this chance to point out Ham’s seeming ineptitude when it came to building a system around the team and hoped that his next coach would have the same mindset as the players did.
“I gotta go Dallas just because I can’t choose Boston. It’s a tough question because it’s such a tough league. There’s so many teams that are growing, you see like the OKCs, the Minnesotas (Timberwolves), and obviously the two teams that are left, young teams that have been together for a while and learned to play in a system around one another. I feel like that’s something you need in any sport you play like consistency is basically a system and just growing with what we have.”
“Obviously Bron and AD is a very special duo to have, but just growing a system around those two to basically help in whatever they need and then playing around them. But I think we’re heading in the right direction, obviously with a coaching change coming up. I don’t know when they’re hiring a coach so I’m right there with y’all on that news. But hopefully, we get somebody that comes to work every single day the way that we do; ready to go try to win a championship.”

Reaves seemed to echo the sentiments of many Laker fans, who grew tired of Darvin Ham’s lack of tactical insight during games, and his refusal to adapt on the fly and make changes. It appears as though the fans were not the only ones who were frustrated by Ham’s way of coaching.
Who Will Be The Next Lakers Head Coach?
Since the dismissal of Darvin Ham, there has been a lot of speculation about who the new head coach of the Lakers will be. JJ Redick’s name has been in the headlines a lot, as he is the name most often linked to the head coach position, thanks to his close ties with LeBron James, along with his well-known basketball acumen.
Stephen A. Smith recently suggested that LeBron James might leverage his free agency to ensure that the Lakers draft his son Bronny and hire JJ Redick as the head coach, and might even leave the Lakers if they do not comply with what he is allegedly demanding.
“Let me tell you what else I’ve been hearing. LeBron James is trying to get the Los Angeles Lakers to draft Bronny James with the second-round pick. He’d also like for JJ Redick to be his next head coach. I’m just telling you what I’ve heard.”
“Now, that doesn’t mean the Lakers want JJ Redick, it doesn’t mean they don’t… He’s one of many, they haven’t made a finite decision about anybody yet, but LeBron has. That’s the guy he wants, which would kind of explain why they’re doing a basketball podcast together, I’m just guessing on that point, but it makes sense.”
The Lakers will have to make some important decisions over the next few months, which will define not just the next season, but also their long-term future. It will be interesting to see what the Lakers will do, but their hunt for a new coach is the situation that most fans will keep a close eye on.
