• NBA fans on Reddit had an intense discussion on players who are ‘washed’ heading into next season

• Washed refers to players who are out of their prime and cannot be expected to contribute at the levels they’re known for

• Fans had a wide spectrum of names, from Jusuf Nurkic and Gordon Hayward to LeBron James and Kawhi Leonard

Being past your athletic prime has to be tough for NBA players. Unfortunately, that realization plays out in front of the whole world, as players fall from the top of the league over the course of their careers.

Many stars in the NBA right now aren’t the same players they used to be, and NBA Reddit had a lot of interesting names to throw out for players who are ‘washed’ heading into next season.

“We’ve seen prominent examples of players who’ve become washed and yet continued to try and stay relevant in the league (Carmelo Anthony), but what’s an example of a veteran whose washedness has flown under the radar?”

One fan started with Jae Crowder and his quick fall from relevance, “Jae Crowder went from a starter to getting DNP in playoff games. His a*s is washed for sure.”

A surprising shout was Portland Trail Blazers center Jusuf Nurkic, “Nurkic? Most people who are washed get sh*t on pretty regularly. Not a lot of ‘low-key washed’ candidates.”

A fan used statistical data to outline why Reggie Jackson fits the bill, “Looking through Basketball Reference, I think Reggie Jackson sadly should fit this term.”

Former All-Star Gordon Hayward was a common shout from fans, “Gordon Hayward… Washed.”

Recently injured Victor Oladipo was on the minds of many, “I think we’ve seen the absolute last of Oladipo after his injuries. Already was teetering as far as health and this puts the nail in the coffin sadly. Hope I’m wrong but I don’t see a way he sticks.”

An out-of-left-field suggestion was Kendrick Nunn, “He’s not really a ‘veteran’ per se, but Kendrick Nunn went from a high efficiency 15.0 PPG scorer to now out the league after that knee bone bruise.”

Former Nuggets’ swingman Will Barton saw his name be brought up, “I thought he was an underrated piece of all those Nuggets teams, but seeing him fall off this year, the Nugs were right to move on, he’s out of gas.”

Some fans were surprised Rudy Gay is still in the NBA, “Rudy Gay. Haven’t seen him in action in 5-6 years.”

Christian Wood is still sitting without a contract for next season and fans think he might be washed as well, “Christian Wood is Hassan Whiteside 2.0.”

The first superstars mentioned were injury-plagued duo, Paul George and Kawhi Leonard, “Paul George and Kawhi are the laundry bros. Washed duo.”

A shocking mention of LeBron James was also made, “LeBron is so good that he covers up a lot of his washedness.”

Al Horford was brought up after his disappointing performances in the playoffs, “Not happy to say it but Al Horford was absolute doo-doo this postseason especially compared to the year before.”

It’s hard to have such discussions, especially when you have grown up rooting for these players when they were making All-Star appearances and competing for titles. Unfortunately, Father Time is undefeated and most of our favorite players will be ‘washed’ before they exit the league, just like we saw with Carmelo Anthony.

Redeemable Free Agents On The Market

If you are a free agent a week from September, it’s likely that there isn’t high regard for you around the league, and many think you are washed. There are a couple of names still waiting to find homes for next season still that could redeem their reputations.

Kelly Oubre Jr. was averaging 20.3 points per game before having his season with the Hornets cut short due to injury. He hasn’t excelled in winning situations before, but a team could definitely use him to be a spark plug off the bench.

Christian Wood put up impressive numbers of 16.6 points and 7.3 rebounds in Dallas, but it coincided with their worst season since Luka Doncic‘s rookie year. Wood didn’t win over the Mavs’ locker room after burning out with the Rockets a year before. He can still provide talent, but his impact on chemistry will be questioned.

Finally, PJ Washington is still on the market. No team saved enough cap space to give him an offer sheet, so it’s up to the Hornets to see what will be done with him. He has great value and upside, so either the Hornets are still looking at sign-and-trades to send him elsewhere or wait for him to accept his $6 million qualifying offer for a final season with the team.
