Victor Wembanyama made his long-awaited Summer League debut for the San Antonio Spurs earlier this month against Brandon Miller and the Charlotte Hornets.
While the Frenchman didn’t have the greatest of nights, with 9 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 blocks on 2-13 shooting from the field, he made a good impression on Miller. During an appearance on Podcast P, the Hornets rookie spoke about what it was like to face Wembanyama.
“A lot of fun, he’s definitely legit 7’6″. He legit 7’6″,” Miller said. “It was fun just seeing him step up to a challenge and guard me full court. I think that shows a lot of heart of who he is. He’s definitely going to have a great career in the league. I think he’s just a great player off the court, just willing to learn off anything.”
“Every ball screen they kept switching with big men. So (I) couldn’t really explain what this is,” Miller said when asked to explain the matchup with Wembanyama. “I think it’s (a) big-to-big switch but Victor’s of course, not a big. He’s like an animal, ain’t no position for him.”
(starts at 15:25 mark):
Wembanyama is going to be a very tricky matchup for almost everyone in the league. He brushed off that disappointing showing against the Hornets with a great one against the Portland Trail Blazers in his second game to quieten the doubters. It’ll be interesting to see the different ways in which teams will try to deal with him because no one has ever seen anything like him.
Draymond Green Revealed How He’d Guard Victor Wembanyama
Someone who is probably going to get that Wembanyama assignment is Draymond Green. The Golden State Warriors forward has guarded bigger men for much of his career and he explained how he would try to guard the Frenchman.
“You got to press up to him,” Green said during an appearance on Podcast P. “You can’t let him get comfortable. If you let him get comfortable you lose because you’re not blocking his shot. He may not even see your contest, like he’s 7’5″, he shoot the ball up here. So with a guy like that you gotta do your work early. I‘m crowding him from the time he starts running up and down the court. When they get the rebound and they start coming I’m crowding because I can’t let him get to a space where he’s comfortable.”
Draymond is listed as 6’6″, so as he says, Wembanyama is probably not even going to see his contest. Green will have to do a lot of his work early on and you better believe he’s going to be extremely physical with him. It’d be very interesting to see how Wembanyama would react and cope with that.
