Dwyane Wade will be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023. It’s obvious that he had a sensational career in the NBA, winning three championships with the Miami Heat.
But is there any aspect of Wade’s game that is overrated? Well, according to NBA analyst Christopher Moore, a.k.a TicketTV, Dwyane Wade’s defense was overrated. In a recent appearance on ‘The Panel’ podcast, Moore named several better guard defenders than Wade.
“I don’t,” Moore said on if Wade is one of the best guard defenders of all time. “I think D-Wade is overrated defensively. There’s 1000 guards is better than him defensively. I’m dead serious. You had Tony Allen, Joe Dumars, Bruce Bowen, Kobe, Kawhi, who’s way better. Gary Payton was way better. Mike was better. Sidney Moncrief was better. Tayshaun Prince was better. Shane Battier, Bobby Jones, Kidd was better.
“Stacey Augmon was better… Lindsey Hunter was a better perimeter defender. Ron Harper, Ben Simmons is a better defender. Mikal Bridges is a better perimeter defender. Thybulle a better defender than D-Wade. Paul George is a better perimeter defender. Jimmy Butler is a better perimeter defender. Chris Paul, Iggy is a better perimeter defender than D-Wade. Pat Beverley is a better perimeter defender. Rondo’s a better perimeter defender.”
The co-hosts lost it when Moore mentioned even Latrell Sprewell was a better perimeter defender than Dwyane Wade. Apart from that, he also mentioned a bunch of forwards in his list, such as Kawhi Leonard and Jimmy Butler.
Wade made the NBA’s All-Defense team three times in his career. He was a decent defender, and even if he slacked at times on the defensive end of the floor, his offense was more than enough to fill the gap.
Dwyane Wade Believed He Could Have Been In The GOAT Debate If Not For Injuries
Being drafted as the fifth overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft, Dwyane Wade was expected to be a phenomenal player in the league. He lived up to those expectations by leading the Miami Heat to an NBA Championship in 2006.
It was Wade’s third year in the league. Had Wade continued playing at that level, he could have earned a spot in the GOAT debate. However, Wade knows injuries ruined the peak of his career.
“You doing the GOAT conversation with me… You take the injuries away, I’m still playing basketball right now if I want to… In my mind, I’m one of them dudes… You couldn’t tell me in 06, 07, 08 I wasn’t going where I wanted to.”
For his career, Wade averaged 22.0 PPG, 4.7 RPG, and 5.4 APG. Apart from winning three NBA titles, Wade is the 2005-06 NBA Finals MVP, 8x All-NBA, 3x All-Defensive, 13x NBA All-Star, and 2008-09 NBA Scoring Champion.
