  • Giannis Antetokounmpo was not consulted about acquiring Damian Lillard
  • The team didn’t notify the superstar because Jrue Holiday was involved
  • Damian Lillard previously revealed he was willing to play with Antetokounmpo

The Milwaukee Bucks recently executed a blockbuster trade for Damian Lillard, giving Giannis Antetokounmpo the opportunity to play with another superstar. However, it seems as though Antetokounmpo knew nothing of the trade before it happened.

During a recent appearance on ESPN, Adrian Wojnarowski revealed that Giannis Antetokounmpo played “no role” in the trade happening and that the Bucks GM did not ask Antetokounmpo for his input on the Damian Lillard trade before it happened.

“He literally played no role,” Wojnarowski said. “In fact, John Horst, Milwaukee’s GM, he did not bring this trade idea or sign-off on it to Giannis Antetokounmpo because Jrue Holiday was involved… he did not want to put that on Giannis Antetokounmpo and have that on his conscience… The Bucks make this decision believing that it give them the best chance to win more titles.”

Sometimes, a superstar ends up vetoing a trade due to one of their friends being involved, thus hampering the team from making a winning move. It is clear that this is what Jon Horst was afraid would happen, and it is easy to see why he didn’t consult with Giannis Antetokounmpo about moving Jrue Holiday.

Damian Lillard will certainly be a difference-maker for the Milwaukee Bucks, and the team made the right move in acquiring him. This past season, Lillard averaged 32.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 7.3 assists per game, while shooting 37.1% from 3PT range. He is a dynamic scorer, who will be an elite No. 2 next to Antetokounmpo.

Damian Lillard Has Already Addressed Getting Traded to The Milwaukee Bucks

Damian Lillard obviously preferred to get traded to the Miami Heat, but it is clear that getting moved to the Milwaukee Bucks is a good option for him as well. In fact, Damian Lillard has already broken his silence on the blockbuster trade that sent him to the Milwaukee Bucks, noting that he is “excited” for this next chapter in his career.

“The casuals won’t be addressed but the Trail Blazers fans and city of Portland that I love truly will be,” said Lillard. “And they will be addressed truthfully. Stay tuned. Excited for my next chapter!”

It remains to be seen how well Damian Lillard will do on the Milwaukee Bucks. The team is slated to be a contender next season, and Lillard will certainly take some of the offensive pressure on Giannis Antetokounmpo. On paper, the two superstars have skill sets that fit with one another, and many are excited to watch them hoop together.

Damian Lillard Has Wanted To Play With Giannis Antetokounmpo For A While

Though many didn’t expect Damian Lillard to end up on the Milwaukee Bucks, it seems as though the star has long wanted to play next to Giannis Antetokounmpo. In fact, in 2022, Lillard picked Antetokounmpo as his ideal championship teammate.

Hopefully, we see Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard figure out a way to win a championship during their time together. They definitely have a solid window to do so, especially if Antetokounmpo ends up signing an extension with the Bucks. The team has the talent to be successful, and they are certainly one of the favorites to win in 2024.
