Speaking on the ‘7PM In Brooklyn’ podcast, NBA legend Carmelo Anthony said something that has sparked debate within the NBA community. On the topic of best shooting guards in basketball history, Anthony singled out Dwyane Wade and tagged him as the best shooting guard in the league during his prime.

“I don’t think people understand how bad of a mothaf*cker Dwyane Wade was,” said Melo. “He was probably the best at shot creation. When he was on his sh*t, arguably, he was the best two-guard in the league.”

Of course, one cannot overstate the basketball greatest of Dwyane Wade. Over 16 years in the NBA, he built one of the greatest careers we’ve ever seen at the position. In 2019, Wade retired as a 13x All-Star, 8x All-NBA player, and 3x NBA Champion. He finished with a career statine of 22.0 points, 5.4 assists, and 4.7 rebounds per game on 48% shooting. But while Wade is undoubtedly near the top in terms of the greatest Heat players ever, there is still some debate about his ranking at the position compared to others who dominated during and after his tenure.

NBA Fans Disagree With Melo

Being a former All-Star himself, Carmelo knows more than most about what makes a good NBA basketball player. Even so, the fans weren’t feeling him on this take and they had no problem admitting it.

The obvious problem with Antyhony’s take on Wade as a scorer is that he was very limited from the perimeter. To say he’s the best at shot creation seems like a stretch when you had others who were better at scoring in different ways.

On the flip side, there were fans who agreed with the opinion and even took it a step further by saying Wade could have been top three all-time barring injuries.

While Anthony was referring to strictly Wade’s prime here, some still believe that Kobe Bryant should have gotten the nod just based on his track record for scoring and creating open shots out of nothing.

No matter your opinions on Kobe, Melo, or Dwyane Wade, it will do nothing to change their status as some of the game’s all-time greatest players. Kobe and Wade specifically rank second and third among all-time shooting guards and their legacy in that regard will remain forever unchanged.

Wade Vs. Kobe

Kobe’s career and Wade’s career overlapped for the majority of their runs and they competed against each other several times throughout the years. Wade, who was drafted in 2003 by the Miami Heat, added his name to the history books after winning his first title with Shaq in 2006. During his tenure in Miami, Wade used his unmatched athleticism and speed to carry out his will in the paint and it was enough for him to get his own statue outside the arena.

As good as Wade was, however, Kobe Bryant still had him beat. While you could make the case that their primes did not match up, Kobe was the best shooting guard in the NBA for over 10 years and most believe he’s the second-greatest shooting guard in basketball history. As an 18x All-Star, 5x champion, and 2x scoring leader, Bryant’s resume speaks for itself and he is unmatched when it comes to shot-making and coming through for your team in the most important moments.
