In December 2004, the Rockets faced the Spurs, trailing by eight points with just over 40 seconds left on the clock. McGrady, in his debut season with the Rockets, scored 13 straight points, securing an improbable 81-80 victory.

While fans and players celebrated this historic comeback, Van Gundy was notably unhappy. He chastised his team in the locker room, focusing on their poor execution during most of the game rather than embracing McGrady’s heroics.

McGrady revealed that Van Gundy “shot it down” and was “going off” in the locker room, bluntly stating that “the process sucked.”

Van Gundy’s response may have seemed surprising, given the extraordinary nature of McGrady’s performance and the thrilling win against a top Western Conference opponent. However, Van Gundy’s pragmatic coaching style often prioritized consistency and teamwork over individual brilliance.

Despite their memorable victory, McGrady and Van Gundy’s partnership in Houston had limited playoff success. The Rockets failed to advance past the first round during McGrady’s early seasons with the team, and they missed the playoffs entirely in the 2005-06 season.

Ultimately, Rick Adelman replaced Van Gundy as head coach, and McGrady’s career faced ongoing challenges due to knee injuries.

Looking Back At Tracy McGrady’s “13 Points In 33 Seconds”

Tracy McGrady’s iconic “13 Points in 33 Seconds” remains one of the most jaw-dropping moments in NBA history, etching his name in the annals of basketball legend.

The date was December 9, 2004, and the Houston Rockets were pitted against the San Antonio Spurs. What unfolded in those seconds was nothing short of a basketball miracle.

The Rockets, trailing by 8 points with 35 seconds left, seemed destined for defeat. But then, in an electrifying display of skill and determination, McGrady orchestrated a comeback for the ages. He sank four consecutive three-pointers, defying logic and gravity with each shot.

The Toyota Center erupted as if possessed by an otherworldly force. McGrady’s extraordinary shooting display was reminiscent of a superhero coming to the rescue of his city.

As the clock ticked down, McGrady’s final three-pointer sealed the deal, giving him 13 points in just 33 seconds. The Rockets secured an improbable victory, and Tracy McGrady’s name was forever etched into the annals of basketball history.

It wasn’t just a clutch performance; it was a mesmerizing spectacle of skill, resilience, and sheer willpower.

“13 Points in 33 Seconds” was more than just a stunning display of scoring prowess. It represented the essence of sports: the never-say-die attitude, the belief that anything is possible, and the ability to defy insurmountable odds.

 The Legacy Of Tracy McGrady

Tracy McGrady, often referred to as T-Mac, left an indelible mark on the world of basketball, and his legacy extends far beyond the hardwood. As one of the most gifted and versatile players in NBA history, his impact on the game is profound.

McGrady’s journey to the NBA began when he was drafted straight out of high school in 1997 by the Toronto Raptors.

Over the course of his illustrious career, he would go on to play for several teams, including the Orlando Magic, Houston Rockets, New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks, and the Qingdao DoubleStar Eagles in China.

Over his 15-year NBA career, McGrady averaged 19.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.2 steals per game, showcasing his versatility as a player.

He was a seven-time NBA All-Star, a two-time scoring champion, and a two-time All-NBA First Team selection, solidifying his status as one of the league’s premier players. His style of play, highlighted by breathtaking scoring runs, left an indelible mark on the game, inspiring young players and fans alike.
