There is no question that the Spurs struck gold when they landed Victor Wembanyama in the draft this year. Hailed as the best prospect since LeBron James, Victor has captivated the basketball world with his talent, personality, and limitless potential.
As the hype train reaches full speed on Wemby and his NBA career, the Spurs have been sending signals that the process to stardom will be slow. One such signal was only having Victor suit up for two summer league games, after which the Spurs promptly shut him down. According to Colin Cowherd, it’s a statement from the team that they will protect their star at all costs.
“They are telling Nike, agents, the NBA, casuals, die-hards, and media: we do not care what you think about Wemby’. It’s gonna be a slow, methodical build. Minute restrictions, game restrictions… ‘We don’t care about Rookie of the Year. He will be methodically developed. We are the franchise that created load management, and wait until you get a load of this.”
Cowherd then described the lucrative, $500 million performance campus the Spurs built a while ago.
“They built this to get the most out of athletes,” Cowherd continued. “Keep them strong, keep them developed, keep them around for as long as they can… I totally agree with what the Spurs are doing. They’re going to control this thing.”

Victor Wembanyama Is On The Path To Stardom
With Wembanyama, while he still has much to prove in the NBA, the Spurs are confident that he can be the guy to lead them to prosperity. With so much potential and a superior work ethic to match, the kid has all the tools he needs to become an NBA legend.
The important thing is that, through it all, he stays true to himself and avoids trying to become something else.
“The advice that comes up the most is just to stay myself,” said Wemby. “I know they trust me and everything is gonna go well as long as I stay true to myself.”
We have seen before how the Spurs handle their stars. As the creators of load management, don’t be surprised if they are extremely overprotective of Victor from the jump. But if you’ve seen the guy play, then you probably understand why the Spurs want to be so careful.
