The Dallas Mavericks recently made a controversial decision to close their season, resting Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic against the Chicago Bulls in an elimination game.

This decision didn’t sit well with the NBA, which launched an investigation into this situation and ultimately fined the Mavericks. New details about this tanking job have emerged, with one analyst revealing the Mavs tried to do it in March.

“The tanking was actually supposed to begin sooner,” Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer said. “My sources say that in late March, Dallas coaches met with players to discuss a plan for Markieff Morris and JaVale McGee to play heavier minutes. That is when the tanking was supposed to begin but Luka and especially Kyrie were agitated that the team was waving the white flag and both refused to sit.”

The Mavericks saw that their season wasn’t going as expected, which prompted their management to come up with a plan to save something this season and get ready for a summer that will present plenty of questions for them.

With the loss against the Bulls, they secured a top-10 pick for the upcoming NBA Draft. This selection could help them build the right team around Doncic and Irving, who are set to compete with the Mavericks for championships.

First, however, they need to re-sign Irving, but that doesn’t seem to be a problem for them right now. Still, this move could be a big success or a terrible problem for the Mavs.

The NBA Fined Dallas Mavericks $750,000 For Resting Players Against Chicago Bulls

Not everything is going well for them right now, and added to all the questions they need to answer, they also have to pay the NBA $750,000 for this tanking job. The Mavericks started this season with huge expectations, but the campaign didn’t unfold as expected.

Their fans hope to see different things next season or Luka Doncic could ask for a trade. They have a lot of work to do to get things back on track, and when that happens, this team will be big trouble.
