The Milwaukee Bucks fired head coach Mike Budenholzer after a humiliating first-round upset as the No. 1 seed in the 2023 Playoffs.
Budenholzer won a title with the Bucks in 2021 and was acrimoniously let go after their first-round loss amidst great personal loss for the coach, something Damian Lillard is upset with.
“Folks out here firing championship coaches as soon as they don’t win the chip.”
Folks out here firing championship coaches as soon as they don’t win the chip …

Coach Bud is the third championship-winning coach to be fired recently, with Nick Nurse’s tenure in Toronto coming to an end after he led the franchise to the 2019 title. The same thing happened with Frank Vogel and the Lakers last season, meaning the only championship coaches in the last 10 years to not be fired from their team are Steve Kerr, Erik Spoelstra, and Gregg Popovich.
What Does Milwaukee Do Next?
The Bucks are expected to heavily pursue Nick Nurse, who is an extremely detail-oriented coach and is known to demand a lot from his players. Budenholzer was committed to executing whatever game plan he drew up, but that led to him not adjusting to situations and losing in embarrassing fashion, as we saw against the Miami Heat.
Giannis Antetokounmpo openly said that he follows whatever game plan his coach draws up and doesn’t try to take control of the situation like some other players would. Nick Nurse may be the ideal coach for him, with his tendency to micro-manage his stars and emphasize strong defensive game plans for success.
Other coaches that have been in preliminary rumors for the job include Frank Vogel and Becky Hammon, so it seems Milwaukee will continue tapping into coaches with championship-winning pedigree.
