Dan Hurley shared his wife’s reaction to him being offered the Lakers‘ head coach position in a recent appearance on the ‘Dan Le Batard Show’. He noted that his wife had a very emotional reaction, getting very angry and asking why he wanted to uproot their lives when they had a good situation in Connecticut.
“She was like crying in the beginning. I think initially, the first couple of days of it, she got wildly angry and emotional. Not like hitting me and stuff… Not like, ‘Get away from me, I don’t want to consider this, you’re torturing me with incredible opportunity, you horrible human being’ (laughs). She got emotional, like, ‘I can’t believe you’re bringing this, our life is so great, it’s perfect… Like our lives couldn’t be better, now you’re bringing this sh*t’.”
Hurley added that his wife warmed up to the idea a few days later, especially when they made the flight out to Los Angeles to meet with Rob Pelinka, Jeanie Buss, and the rest of the organization. While they enjoyed the trip and considered the prospect of Hurley taking the job, they decided against it once they returned back to Connecticut.
“So, she was bad in the beginning, but she warmed up to it when we got out there and she met Rob and Jeanie and felt the weather… Just met the people though, mostly and saw the vision of it. She was into it. But then when we got back to Connecticut, without having made a decision and we got back home and we both flipped back.”

“Our lives couldn’t be better and now you’re bringing this sh*t?…she warmed up when she got out there…
…We have a real beautiful connection here…in the end, it’s probably the deciding factor.”

Hurley rejected the Lakers’ 6-year, $70 million contract, choosing to remain with UConn to chase the elusive NCAA championship three-peat. The Lakers have turned their attention to JJ Redick after the rejection, with them planning to interview him this week.
Dan Hurley Said The Lakers Could Have Convinced Him To Sign With A Better Deal
Dan Hurley spoke after rejecting the Lakers’ offer, saying that they an improved offer from the 17-time NBA champions would have made him reconsider his decision. Hurley noted while he doesn’t know what the number to make him flip would have been, he does know that it was a possibility.
“To leave, there probably is. To leave a place at any moment in your life, to say finances are a motivating factor is a thing. To stay at a place I don’t think it’s ever gonna be a thing. To stay at UConn, I think it never would have been a financial thing. This wasn’t some pressure tactic to make me the highest-paid college coach.. that sh*t was already done… but to leave all of that behind there probably is a number but I don’t know what that is.”
Hurley also confirmed that LeBron James was corresponding with him via text during the days when he was contemplating the offer. While he rejected the deal, Hurley spoke positively of his interaction with LeBron James.
Perhaps Hurley will make his way to the NBA later in his career, but for now, he is choosing to chase glory in collegiate basketball. The Lakers’ head coach hunt will continue for the time being, as they look to other options for the vacancy.
