Danny Green was waived on Tuesday to make roster spots available for the four players the Philadelphia 76ers acquired in the James Harden trade. Chris Haynes revealed that Green left $300,000 on the table by reducing a bonus to help the 76ers and keep them in line with NBA salary cap rules.
“If he was on the Sixers roster opening night he would get 500k. Well he restructured it where he would get 200K to help out with tax purposes and now he’s waived.”
Danny Green helped out the 76ers by taking less money and was waived a couple weeks into the season 😩

This continues a worrying trend by Philadelphia of seemingly acting against the interest of the players they agree to terms with. Daryl Morey is alienating a lot of veterans in the name of business, though there probably is more to uncover in the Green situation. If this is the end of his tenure in the NBA, it’ll be a very sad way to head out.
Green averaged 8.7 points and 3.4 rebounds for his career and is a three-time champion, winning titles with the Spurs, Raptors, and Lakers. He still has a lot to provide to an NBA roster, so let’s see if he gets another chance sometime this season.
Danny Green’s Family Had Settled In Philadelphia
Green had returned to the Philadelphia 76ers this summer to be a championship-wining bench veteran for the roster after spending a season away. Unfortunately, that isn’t happening. Green revealed he and his family had just started settling back into Philadelphia when he got waived.
“This happens as I’m almost done unpacking all my stuff. We just moved in about a week ago, just got the family here a week ago…and now it’s like ‘you gotta figure it out.’”
Danny Green says he was 90% finished unpacking when he got the call that he was being waived 😥

Green signed with the 76ers roster in the offseason of 2020 after winning a title with the Lakers. After playing a rotational year in two seasons, Green tore his ACL with the 76ers and would get traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in the summer of 2022. He was on the Grizzlies and Cavaliers roster last season. He was hoping for a permanent home in Philly, but that looks cloudy now.
Will Danny Green Return To The 76ers?
Even after what the franchise did, Green is understanding of their situation and is on good terms with them. As a result, Chris Haynes believes a return should not be ruled out down the season.
“While Danny Green was disappointed by how the final days of his tenure in Philadelphia unfolded, there remains an affinity between the three-time NBA champion and the 76ers organization. Neither side has ruled out a return should a roster spot become available.”

Green is 36 years old and doesn’t have many years left in the NBA ahead of him. With Morey likely aggregating more players in a future trade for a star, a roster spot could open up for Green. However, if some other team comes before the 76ers, it’ll be interesting to see if Danny passes that up on a verbal promise from Philly again.
