From one holdout to another, the Philadelphia 76ers have struggled to keep their players happy over the years. This time, not long after the Ben Simmons saga, it’s James Harden who is threatening to abandon his post after feeling misled by 76ers GM Daryl Morey.
But, sources say, Morey remains unmoved by Harden’s actions and is likely to keep him on the roster despite being called a “liar” by the star shooting guard hours ago.
“Source: Daryl Morey is unmoved by James’ comments,” wrote league insider Jason Dumas on Twitter. “He is holding firm in his stance that he will not trade him unless it makes the Sixers a better team. Meanwhile, I’m told James’ agent advised him against making that statement.”
Harden lit the NBA community on fire this week after making public statements against Philly GM, Daryl Morey. “Daryl Morey is a liar and I will never be a part of an organization that he’s a part of,” said Harden during his visit to China.
It’s unprecedented for a star player to openly rebel against the GM like this, but Harden has made it somewhat of a specialty of his to wage war against team executives. In Houston, he sabotaged the Rockets to force a trade to Brooklyn. Then, with the Nets, he played less than a full season before calling it quits and demanding out of there.
He’s now on his way out of Philadelphia, and it raises some serious questions about his capabilities as a star.

At this point, the cold war between Harden and his former friend Daryl Morey has reached a stalemate. Until some other team steps in with a palatable offer, Morey seems likely to reject anything that comes his way.
For him, despite the drama, Harden is still a star and he will only accept a star’s return in any deal for him. Meanwhile, as the Beard continues to hold firm, it’s looking more and more like he’ll miss some real time this season as he waits for a trade out of town.
Where this all leaves Joel Embiid is still uncertain, but this is far from where Sixers fans wanted to be after 5+ years of “the process.”
